Loved the 2e boxed set for FR, even though we didn't use it for D&D. Also, Moonshae boxed set. Oh, and Waterdeep. Those maps were big.

The 3e Forgotten Realms campaign book is great. We used it a lot during our 3e days and beyond. So much info and lore. I loved getting lost in it.

I think most of my favorites have already been mentioned (Original Box Set, 2E Revised Box Set, Faiths & Avatars series, Aurora's, Volo's Guides, the entire FR1-16 series, the FOR series, 3E Campaign Setting), but I also loved 2 of the the ruins box sets - Ruins of Myth Drannor and Ruins of Undermountain.

Even though I never used much of it, I did enjoy The Ruins of Undermountain, it was great to read, even if running a megadungeon is a lot more work than I was ready for.

Just got 3rd FRCS recently off Ebay and I'm amaze by the amount and quality of content... I wonder how much books would need nowadays to have all that content, the font size is so small, this book is packed. I wonder if I should still get the two new FR books, I guess I'll just be disappointed after that one...

Had you read it before?

  1. Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting (3e)
  2. Silver Marches (3e)
  3. Underdark (3e)
  4. Ed Greenwood Presents Elminster's Forgotten Realms (system-neutral)
  5. Magic of Faerûn (3e)
#1 and #4 do a stellar job of highlighting the Realms. #2 and #3 detail regions I DMed the hell out of and have lots of hooks. #5 covered a variety of magical practices and items I found cool, from Mage Fair festivals to mythals.

It's possible the two upcoming FR books, taken together, might have more ready-to-use content than the 3e FRCS. The new books will have more mini-adventures, if nothing else. But it's really saying something that it takes two full-sized hardcovers just to complete with the content in the 3e FRCS alone.

I think I am an outlier here, I have some of the 3e books but I have got more use out of the Sword Coast Adventurers guide than from those other books. I generally want a light gazetteer, placenames, a sentence or two about what is special here but light on the detail.
I mostly want somewhere to anchor a short or longer adventure in an area. Most of these books have more detail than I will remember. I think my preferred product would be one with a lot of maps.
