D&D General Favorite Iconic D&D Metropolis

Which is best?

I thought I'd never heard of Absalom until I read that it was from pathfinder, don't know much about it thought (capital of the devil worshippers?)

My favourite metropolis is Sigil, I like the fact that it's in the centre of the multiverse, the toris shape, the weird things you can find there, the factions. It's probably the amount of detail about it and the fact that it's from one of my favourite settings that makes it stand out to me.

No, Absalom is an island city state near the devil-worshiping coastal nation of Cheliax that has been invaded by big world stomping armies but never fallen. It is a big trade city at the intersection of a couple trade routes.

Most famous for the god Aroden raising the artifact Starstone (from the asteroid the aboleth used to destroy his Azlanti civilization), founding the city, and setting up an epic mega dungeon where if a mortal can reach the Starstone they will ascend to godhood. Three of the core 20 Golarion major gods ascended in this manner (Iomedae the paladin, Cayden Cailean (did it while drunk), and Norgorber).

It is also the largest city in the core Inner Sea region of the setting.

I'm shocked that Palanthas from Dragonlance isn't on this list!

That's my vote. It's the jewel of Solamnia. However, its brightness is besmirched by the Tower of High Sorcery of Palanthas, and its infamous Shoikan Grove.

Laughing, because that WAS my first idea. And then I couldn't remember a single thing about the city other than the High Clerist's Tower, but I attribute that more to my degrading memory than descriptive imagery.

I’m old enough to remember City State of the Invincible Overlord and City State of the World Emperor, from back in 1E days.
I used the former as a DM and walked the mean alleys of the latter as a player.
CISO was a groundbreaking release, coming out four years before the Greyhawk Folio, six years before Flying Buffalo's Citybook I.

City Beyond the Gates was originally high level AD&D - PCs recover the Mace St Cuthbert from the British Museum
That was one trippy adventure.
