The dual-weapon style does give you more bang from your buck on the overall damage. Of course this is predicated on the idea that you don't have to deal with DR or that your weapons will always out-pace DR.

Once you start hitting that wall, two attacks at 25 against a DR of 30/+3 aren't that nifty when compared to the typically lesser single attack at 40.

That's just me though. If I DM I make sure all encounters are balanced against all styles. You should have a portion where it pays to tank with a shield, a portion where dual-weapon can clean things up and a portion of 'need the big guns to deal with it'.

What the hell?

For my PERSONAL style, I prefer a fully loaded semi-automatic shotgun with slug ammo, using a 9mm glock with an extra-large ammo clip for a backup weapon. If I expect extremely difficult targets, I will borrow a .45 ACP from a friend for improved stopping power in my backup weapon. :)

If looking for my D&D character, I prefer two-handed weapons, a la gratclubs and greatswords. The two-bladed sword is excellent for this, because I can use two weapon when facing larger numbers of inferior creatures, and can switch to two-handed style to be no penalties and the extra damage when facing tougher foes. :)

I just wish there were stats for a 2-handed war-hammer! Can anyone post some?

Just use the increasing size rules on a warhammer:

Cost 50 gp
Size L
Damage 2d6
Crit 20/x3
Range --
Weight 20lbs
Type P

Just a warhammer bumped up to large size. Cost and weight were guesstimates based on greatsword and greataxe. I think it's in some FR book as well.

Considering the context, I haven't had any problem distinguishing between "wielding" and "welding." After all, how often do RPG characters whip out their +4 acetylene torch of blowing things to little melty bits?

That aside, dual-wielding light weapons is the more effective solution for characters who have a dex bonus at least 2 higher than their strength bonus, provided they have taken weapon finesse for their dual weapon. It just requires more specialization and feats to be effective. High dexterity, low strength fighters need the extra attacks to catch up in damage, and with the right feats they don't lose out on their attack bonus enough to be hurt by it.

Ultimately, it comes down to a style thing. Do you want a hulking warrior who smashes enemies to pieces with a single blow of his greatsword, or a light, fast whirling dervish who slices and dices his foes to pieces with multiple slashes of his short swords? If you set the character up right, I think the mechanical differences are a wash.

Personally, in RL I AM a hulking type. My dex bonus is probably a whopping 0, probably a -1 until I've had my morning coffee. It's fun to play against type with a medium-to-low strength, high dexterity, archer/whirling dervish type.

eh, i spend a lot of time bouncing between this board and several art boards, in that context it may make more sense :)

In that context it defintely does make sense. Besides, I wasn't actually trying to be snarky. It was just a set up to the (admittedly) bad joke immediately following. ;)
