Truth be told I liked 2e AD&D with Skills & Powers. It gave more character customization to the PCs but still kept things fairly simple (IMHO) for the DM. If you throw in Combat & Tactics then the combat of the game is for the most part the same as 3e.
I voted 'Basic Rules'. The old Red Book was my first step into the world of D&D and it has a place in my heart that nothing can ever replace. I know the mechanics were clunky and in some cases outright contradictory but it is the one game I would go back to in a heartbeat - if I could find anyone else to play it!
Well, aside from the 3E/4E ratio, I do not think that much will change.
The best edition of the game you have the most powerful memories of. The sense of wonder of your first edition will probably never be able to compete with a later edition.
That's why I have more fond memories of Shadowrun then of D&D - Shadowrun was my first game, but I played it only like a year or so, compared to 7-8 years of D&D by now...
