Feh!! I need a break! (Brain hurts....can't...DM)

Three years of solid, every other week DMing has melted my brain. I'm taking the summer off and coming back into it starting October.

Any advice to recharge those DM batteries?

Easy. Play something else (CoC, which is highly playable and fairly well known but also feels very different in style, is always a good alternate).

In any case, just stop DMing for a while, and with time the itch will come back. It always does. Going cold turkey on all gaming might be rough though.

If you can finagle someone else to do the DM'ing, then PLAY. There's nothing like playing for a few months to recharge the drive batteries.

Make sure you're reading a lot, especially non-genre stuff. Everything from a technical manual to a book on horseback riding to a cheesy romance novel can actually be useful!

The best way to recharge your DM battery is play a good game under anther DM. Often times he will induce great ideas for your next game.

Another way is to play 30 minutes under a horrible DM, then your ready to kick him out and takek the screen back.

I agree with the above 100%. Being a player really puts a whole new perspective on DMing, and I make a point to take a break from DMing every year and play for a couple of weeks.

I think the most important thing is to take some time to think about what it is you actually want to do, which parts you enjoy and which you don't.

Then when you come back, try and organise a game around the bits you like and minimise the bits you don't. In extreme cases this might even mean getting someone else to DM, playing core rules only, or playing Mutants and Masterminds instead.

Also, make sure you are interested in the setting. If you are into swashbuckling movies, run a swashbuckler campaign, for example. As your interests change, change the focus of the campaign.

In my case, I don't have the time or the energy to prepare detailed notes ahead of the sessions, so I keep most of the plot in my head. My notes for the session tonight consist solely of the stats for quasits and retrievers, copied out of the Monster Manual, and the name "Desatio". (And I don't really need the name written down, since like all my NPC names I stole it.)

The game would run better if I prepared fully for each session, but our group is very social, so they prefer me to largely "wing it" each week rather than have a meticulously prepared adventure but only meet once a month.

Well for right now I think I'm going to shirk gaming altogether. When you start looking for excuses not to play and you're the guy to runs the game, it's time to hang it up for a bit. I actually had a pretty good run, when I'm ready to start it up again I know I'll be able to hang.

That is true, but you also get great ideas by reading books. If your gaming group is mastered by another GM he could be better than you and then the players want to play under him....
