Fellow DM, How do you handle Hit Point at each new level ?

After one too many instances where a set of bad rolls led to a Fighter with real problems doing his job (such that it was affecting the enjoyment of the game - I like my D&D heroic), we instituted a fixed hit points scheme:
Right, we had some bad rolls in a game, and my cleric-barbarian-fighter was significantly below average on HP.
"tough to be you" didn't really cut it when the character is inffective and it was easy to change PC's.

So, instead of being able to play the PC I had, I swapped to another PC. The game is supposed to be fun, not a trial. :)

We did have a DM that had the "roll, with minimum of your Con bonus".
So my Gnome wizard with toad was 9 HP per level (con 20). I had more HP than most of the party, but a +5 con will do that. :)

Max at first DMG style. Re roll ones after that of fixed hp from the DMG but once you choose it sticks no matter what class (i.e. barbarian benefits much less than a wizard).

I used allow rerolls on 1 or 2 but then I was in drop in game where we had to play hp as rolled. Changed my game play. I went from tank to wimp after a few levels. Played smarter after that.

Unless I missed it, I haven't seen anyone post the reduced die method. After you roll, if you are unhappy, you can roll again on a die that is one type lower (d12->d10). d4 goes to d2.

Characters have to roll at least 30% of the value of the die they are rolling.

So for d4 and d6, ones count as twos
For d8 and d10, ones and twos count as threes
and for d12, ones, twos, and threes count as fours

Nudges the average up a little bit but still random without overly hosing people

DO none of you who give out more hp than average find that evocation spells and weapon damage become less attractive (relatively) to save-or-X spells?

I give out half the die number per level (which is half a hit point per level lower than average).

My players roll for their hit points, rerolls on 1's but only the first time. They roll their stats too, but arrange them as they see fit. I even roll up the hit points for my NPCs ;).
