If you switch first and forth shift then we...I can prepare my spells while everyone else sleeps, That'll give us the chance to leave earlier in the morning

OOC:[sblock]It's finally official...2nd level. Woot![/sblock]
Metagame, for Two:[sblock]Oirhandir really wants to go first or last as a general rule, and here's why. From the PHB (I don't have the SRD handy):

"To prepare her daily spells, a wizard must have a clear mind. To clear her mind, she must first sleep for 8 hours."

Now, what does that have to do with a bard? From the PHB:

"Each day, sorcerers and bards must focus their minds on the task of casting their spells. A sorcerer or bard needs 8 hours of rest (just like a wizard), after which he spends 15 minutes concentrating. (A bard must sing, recite, or play an instrument of some kind while concentrating.)"

Now, how is this modified by Oirhandir's elven heritage?

"If the character does not need to sleep for some reason, she still must have 8 hours of restful calm before preparing any spells. For example, elf wizards need 8 hours of rest to clear their minds, even though they need only 4 hours of trance to refresh their bodies. Thus, an elf wizard could trance for 4 hours, then rest for 4 hours, then prepare spells."

And what is rest?

"The wizard does not have to slumber for every minute of the time, but she must refrain from movement, combat, spellcasting, skill use, conversation, or any other fairly demanding physical or mental task during the rest period."

So, Oirhandir prefers to take first or last watch, and for role-playing purposes prefers to take advantage of his musical skill to help the humans and other races unwind a bit. Everybody also gets 15 minutes of revlle in the morning just before breakfast, although I've never role-played that.

My interpretation of "rest" is perhaps one notch less strict than the PHB. Once he's completed trance, I'd say Oirhandir could engage in light conversation without violating the guidline. But a deep philosophical discussion on the purpose of having different races on the back of the ENworphant, or an argument, or even just nervously scanning the camp perimeter every few minutes would clearly break it. SO...

Oirhandir's forumula is (1), lull everybody to sleep, (2), take a watch so that he's pulling his own weight, (3), take the first watch so that he can get his beauty rest and replentish spells, (4), trance for 4 hours, (5), keep whoever's on watch company for another 4 hours, but without really participating in keeping watch, and (6), provide a little wake up music once all the other spell-casters have gotten their rest. He's willing to modify this if there is a good reason, though.

And as there has been no spell casting on this first day, Oirhandir wouldn't mind making a one-time exception, if that's what the party really wants. But in game terms, that's why I used the line: "He'll play until either someone contests him for the first watch, or the entire party is asleep." Just roleplay it out if you really want to.[/sblock]

OOC: OK, here's the watch I'm going to go with that I think fills all the reqs that people want, and then we can continue. I'll assume this is your regular night watch, so further nights should be uneventful.

(BTW, thanks for the times Two, though the 10 PM - 1PM watch is a bit long ;))

obviously, lacking acurate time telling, the times are aproximate.

Watch 1: 8pm - 10 pm - Lasair & Oirhandir - By request of Oirhander, and Lasair is not alone. If need be, Oirhandir can rest an hour into the watch if he needs spells.

Watch 2: 10pm - 1am - Troi - Troi is fairly good at noticing things anyway, so darkess won't bother him as much.

Watch 3: 1am - 4am - Fang - Warrior with darkvision, nuff said

Watch 4: 4pm - Dawn/Wakeup (likely around 6 ish) Sunny & Elise can alternate hours. Sunny takes the first hour while Elise studies, and then Elise can take the second hour while Sunny studies. They'll still both be awake, as will Most likely Oirhandir.

Unless someone objects, I'm going to use this. I'll continue on with the story a but later today.

*duh thanks everyone there were a few very obvious things I missed (bard spellcasting, etc. etc.).

The latest watch line-up sounds fine by me!*

As he played, there was more discussion of who would stand which watch. Finally it was sorted out that Lasair would stand the first watch with Oirhandir. He noticed that everyone else had drifted off, and that Lasair eyelids were getting heavy. The elf gently tapped her on the shoulder with his mallet.

"I thought you were going to stand the first watch, with me", he grinned, as she immediately became fully alert. They shared a chuckle and a few stories during their watch, waking Troi as needed.

(OOC: Were you using a Lullaby cantrip on us? Otherwise, Lasair is already alert. Anyways, if nothing eventful happens during first watch, just skip my talking to Troi.)

"Oirhandir, as an elf, did you ever live in one of these 'forests' of which I hear? They really seem like interesting places"

OOC: No, just a little RP license. Half the party said they were nodding off, I figured your character would be the last to go. For that matter, I wouldn't have thought she'd have fallen fast asleep, just gotten a little drowsy.

Ah, Lasair, chattering away the entire journey out from Orussus. Oirhandir supposed the watch would be no different...not that he minded pleasant conversation. The elf replied.

"Well, yes, I did, in a vale on the other side of the great ocean. Although I don't know if there was anything special about it, save that we shared part of it with some fey. Although I don't know too much about them, for the most part our folk stayed to our part of the forest and they stayed to theirs. I met them often enough to learn the language that they shared between them, but that took years. Our meetings were short, so I had to learn just a little bit at a time."
