Festival of Halina (Orsal Judging)

Fang takes up his position in the marching order with javelin in hand. As the caravan roles on he, once again, begins tapping his javelin against his side with every step of his right leg.

Tap... tap... tap.

"Indeed! I am most relieved that we were not attacked by bandits, although it still takes a bit of getting used to that I will not be awakened by the blazing sun of my homeland--certainly the shade is more comfortable, and the fact that it is not brutally cold at night is very cozy!"

The caravan continues south on the road. In the distance, the woods thin out a bit, and you see a large wooden bridge that spans the river.

Ligeia to Elise:[sblock]You sense that Ligeia senses something in the way, and then a general excitement you've come to understand to mean that she sees water. Unfortunately, due to it being a limited empathy you're not sure of much more than that[/sblock]
Troi:[sblock]think he sees some people by the bridge, but he can't make out how many or what they are at this distance.[/sblock]

"W...What is that thing?" Lasair asks, pointing at the river, "Is that an ocean? So...so much water..."

"Ha ha... that's a good one my girl... no that's no ocean, just a little river... an ocean has about, well, approximately 199,550,234,123,345,341 times as much water.

At least, that's what my sources tell me."

*Lasair laughs at Sunny's pronouncement.*

"Oh, that was quite a funny joke, Sunny! Truly you know how to good-naturedly poke humour at my naivete. But really, this is the ocean, right? How can there possibly be millions of millions times more water in one place?"

"Yes, hrm... I'm not quite sure at this point who is the butt of what joke. But, to clarify: I'm quite serious, Lasair.

That is simply a river.

There are many thousands of rivers in the world, and all of them drain (ultimately) into the sea.

They have been doing that (all of them) for a thousand years as well.

Consequently, the sea is a collection of all the water that ever flowed through any river in this world -- plus a bunch that was just sitting there to begin with.

Yes. I know. It's quite a lot. It's huge. Lots of water.

Don't try to think about it too much. Just accept it for what it is: an incalculably large amount of water. There. Done."

"Thousands of these? But noone in these wet lands needs that much! How can the world be fair, when people die of thirst in..."

"AH. Yes. Precisely, Lasair. One of the great questions. And it requires a further question, but one directed at you: 'why do you expect anything about the world to be fair?' "
