So, who is all excited for Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children?

Looks to be a 60min movie released sometime next year. An interesting move, since most fans have been clamouring for an actual game redux or sequal.

Having never seen the first movie (I heard it stunk), what would convince anybody that this one will be better?

The first movie (Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within) followed the premise of all the Final Fantasies, being that its story was completely and totally unrelated to the others. That aside, I enjoyed it. And so did my girlfriend, and the friends I took to see it. So I dunno.

More to the point though, recently Square has been breaking its rule where all Final Fantasies are different worlds, with Final Fantasy X-2 coming out sometime soon. The new movie (Final Fantasy: Advent Children) is the 'secret' Final Fantasy VII-2 project I've been hearing so much about.

(Final Fantasy VII was one of the most popular Final Fantasies in the states, and in large part helped catapault the series into the popularity it currently holds today)

Meh. Couldn't really care less. Doesn't blow my skirt up.

FF7 wasn't that great of a story in my book. Certainly it doesn't stand up to repeated playings (although IMO few RPGs do... Chrono Trigger being the notable one).

And a big reason it's so popular here is because it was a good number of people's first introduction to RPGs. I'm not saying that's bad, or that people that started with FF7 are bad... anything that increases the prevalence of RPGs in our society is good IMO. But there's an attachment you have to that first game you play, and since FF7 was far from my first RPG, it just doesn't excite me.

Personally, I would much rather Square-Enix work on a PS2 version of FFT, or a real sequel to Chrono Trigger. Or a Dragon Quest Tactics... that would be cool too.

Gah. I guess I'll have to play through FF7 now, if I can get my hands on it, before this thing comes out, because I want to see it, because I saw the first one and (if you discount the fact that it's not really Final Fantasy) it was cool. In that non-Hollywood, we-don't-need-no-stinkin'-contrived-happy-bits way that maybe put people off.

LightPhoenix - You may be happy to hear that Square has recently released a "sequel" to Final Fantasy Tactics, but its for the Game Boy Advanced.

Note that if follows the Square ideal of being a sequel in only the broadest terms, having little to do with the actual story line of the first.

I still plan to buy it. :D

Edit: I liked FF7. Wasn't the first RPG I ever played (far from it) but I still thought it was a great game.

I loved FF7. Sign me up for this. :D

Sure, not a paragon of storytelling but the game was very fun and blew me away at the time. Out of any of the PS1 Final Fantasy games, 7 is the most deserving of this treatment.
