D&D (2024) Fighter brainstorm

If that's your take on rage I don't think you are playing barbarians enough. Resistance makes barbarians a tanking god, I have routinely seen barbarian players throw themselves into the pits of hell and survive things they had no business surviving. I am continuously surprised at how bad the barb might look on paper, but in play are one of the best classes, I have never had a player play one and been disappointed.

The trick with the barb is that rage doesn't really improve their offense like it did back in the day, that is what reckless attack is for. Advantage on any attack you wants means you crit often, and hit even more so.
Of course, one also has to note that Barbarians tend to take a lot more hits (thanks to Reckless Attack) than other characters, and again, Rage is not a resource one can use all the time. Further, you can fall out of rage in certain battles, and enemies have no particular reason to attack you with the base Barbarian class so I find "tanking" arguments to be somewhat dubious. If someone else has more of an impact on the battle than the Barbarian, that resistance might not mean much.

I would sincerely love it if WotC would actually do some research on fighting techniques. Get some anthropologists, martial artists, weapon and armor smiths, from a few different major cultural traditions and identify some of the most basic techniques that are shared between them.

When has the fighter ever been a complex class?

How about

Simple: sorcerer, fighter
Moderate: warlock, barbarian
Complex: wizard, monk
4E, where they could get really interesting.

Simple: Wizard, Cleric, Druid, Warlock
Moderate: Ranger, Paladin, Cavalier, Psion
Complex: Fighter, Monk, Barbarian, Rogue, Commoner

Another way to put it: What class would you play if you wanted to be at least as competent in combat as a teenager from a rough neighborhood, since a fighter is not that?

Simple: Starter Class that comes in the starter set and a free PDF. Attacks, has skills, has a cantrip-like in the vein of allt he Ranger spells that shouldn't be spells.

Moderate: Literally everything else.

I don't see the 4e fighter as more or less complex than anything else.

You may be thinking about essentials. The book that came out after everyone complained about not having a simple option.

And again. We don't need 5 different weed wackers. I am all for making more interesting martial options.

But we do need one.

That's the point. The 4E fighter wasn't more or less than anything else. 5E should have a fighter of the same caliber. They can have an Essentials Slayer-equivalent if they want a martial weed wacker in addition to a fighter who wouldn't get laughed out of a Ren Faire tournament.

We're in a thread complaining about fighters.
I thought we were in a thread brainstorming ideas for fighters for OneD&D?

And I don't take a few complaints on forums as indicative of broader trends. A lot of the complaints seem to be that fighters don't simulate real life combat well enough, which has never been a problem for me.
