Fighter/Psion

JDVN1 - This is his full reply to me when I protested he wasn't being fair:

"Psions don't need healing. Its not a fundamental part of thier nature. So they don't have it in my world as of now. None of the three psions i have made had it anyway.
Rangers cast CLW as a level 2 spell!
Tina is a special case.
The fact you can only heal yourself makes it WORSE in some ways.
But as you have no idea what i am talking about, don't try to second guess what i am thinking and what i am 'forgetting' as i know the rules of the game and the intricacies/tactics far better than you do."

No, you are not being rude at all. Don't worry about it.

He called me a "powergamer" and he has a character that is:

Bard/Fighter/Barb 5/2/1
Feats: Combat Reflexes, Exotic Weapon (Spiked Chain), Disarm, Trip? (not sure about this one), Combat Expertise, Power Attack.

Coincidentally, this guy has a low Wisdom, so he goes around grabbing every magical item he can lay his hands on as he is "curious" about it. The party's Sorceror don't have any wands or staffs, he has all of them.

*shrugs* As I said. You play the cards you are dealt.

KarinsDad - I don't like pure "self-taught" (Psions/Sorcerors in particular) classes as a personal preferrence. In medieval times, you start training for your job at 6-8 years old. That isn't old enough to fully control and/or manifest your latent powers yet. By the time you can (13-15-ish?), you'd have a lot of training in a "trained" class already. I usually take 1 level of a "trained" class to reflect this. I also usually choose Fighter because it is the most common "trained" class. This DM said either 2 or none. I know it weakens my character, but it is a matter of principle, so I took the level hits. Then, of course, came the barrage of neuterings. He has effectively banned something from every Psionic class.

Fighter and Psion doesn't sound like it adds up to Doctor.

Why not Cleric and Psion?

*shrugs* I wish there was another group I can join but in Auckland, this is about it.

Control freak would be a more precise term for my DM. He wants to monitor everyone, and make sure that no one is too powerful. So, he goes around awarding the occasional feat or inherent bonus to your stats to make you "catch up" to the others. Or give you a better item, etc. Basically patching holes that he himself created in the first place. He is taking out Psionic healing because the stupid rules change he made to all healing spells made Psionic healing too powerful, according to him. Again, if I had the option, I'd tell him to get lost and find myself another group to play with. Until then, I'm stuck with him.

He has killed the older members of the party. Several times. In the last battle before the group disbanded, he killed ALL of them.

Oh, Fighter and doctor? One word: MEDIC!!!!!!! :D

Andor - *shrugs* We play the cards we are dealt.

Nonsense. Deal your own cards.

Take control yourself.

He isn't a god.

He's a person who is living some sort of personal control fantasy.

Get the group together and as a group TELL your DM that you are going to play without ANY house rules because the rules as written are more balanced and need less tweaking than anything he comes up with. Group decision. As DM, he has no control over it.

No ands, ifs, buts, or maybes.

Do it as a group though.

And if he does not like it, he can be either relegated from DM status to player status, or even to non-player status.

And if he continues to TPK people, kick him out as DM, and if he makes a stink about it, kick him out of the group.

That's nonsense.

Why would you allow yourself to put up with such abuse? You sound like one of those whiny women who won't leave their husband, even though he beats her.

Take charge of your group. Grow a backbone and make sure your fellow gamers grow one with you.

Oh.

My.

God.

Run away: Now. :\

I'd agree these boards are much better....

Although he might do well to avoid this thread. Sounds like the kind of guy who'd drive himself into a killing frenzy from reading this. :)

Seriously though, it sounds like you aren't happy with his game - got to be worth trying a change. You could try and talk one of the other players into it... or just have a go yourself?

On another note, it sounds like he really doesn't like psionics at all. May be wrong, but I have a suspicion that any power that is actually useful is likely to be branded 'too powerful' and smacked with a nerf bat. I think you might have a more entertaining time playing something else?

Good point.

As I DM, I don't like psionic either, so I banned 'em. Consider just ditching the class entirely.

DMs are allowed to have this type of control. If they want a poor magical healing game, that is their choice. It is also possible that the DM has plans and those plans required that the players not have access to a lot of magical healing. Normally, I would inform the player ahead of time.

This is a common misconception about DMs.

DMs only have as much power and control as their players allow them to have.

If the DM has a few house rules quirks and they are somewhat reasonable (or even unreasonable as long as there are not many of them), then most players go with the flow.

If the DM is overbearing, a control freak, and/or puts a lot of obstructions in front of the players, sooner or later the players will (and should) take control back.

The game is played by everyone at the table, not just one person. You will only have an enjoyable game if everyone is having fun. The DM is only in control because the group allows it, not because he is special in any way. If he is creating major problems, a group should get a new DM.
