Taking control of this group is a good way to alienate the entire group. The game is not worth that.
It seems like you have a conflict in what you are stating here.
If the group are good friends, why would taking control of the group alienate the entire group? Good friends should have no problem sitting down together and saying "Hey, this does not work for me, let's fix it.". Do it in a positive manner and if the friends are really friends, they won't have a problem with it.
In any case, I gave you the best advice I had. Either you take it, or you do not.
