I wonder how many other classes have flight supported in fiction. The Eladrin have people with Flight(hover) in the monster manual, it's not such a big stretch for Tieflings either.

Exactly. Unsustained flight of any number of squares is a glorified hop or exceptional leap (if its really far) Actual flight would let you remain airborne at the end of your turn.

One obscure point of trivia is that Japanese has the same verb, "tobu", for both "to jump" and "to fly", which has led to interesting mistranslations in some anime fansubs I've seen. This feels oddly related... ;) ;)

There must be some variants on those verbs, since I do recall a subbed anime I saw long ago with the quote "Do you jump like a frog, or leap like a rabbit?"

Overall its not bad IMHO. Compared to "regular" flight:
  • No minimum squares of movement required
  • There are no Clumsy penalties
  • There is no Altitude Limits

The primary reason it "lands" is that it is a move action Power rather than a natural mode of movement, which precludes the ability to Hover. Granting Hover would allow the Dragonborn to never need to land, being able to shift and make opportunity attacks while flying, not to mention avoid terrain, traps, and foes alike. It would make the ultimate ranged combatant.

Overall, the old style of flight was determined to be a game-breaking feature, thus the 4E nerf. However, considering the power progression, gaining tactical flight at 12th and overland flight at 16th... you Could if you really wanted to, make Dragonborn Epic Destiny that grants Hover. Wealready have 2 racial ED's that I know of as examples: Raven Consort (Shadar-kai) & Redeemed Drow.

Just a thought.

I understand the reasons given for the changes. I still find it amusing that basic game elements that players have been enjoying for over 30 years suddenly become "broken" and removed from the official game.

Personally I don't see why flight clumsy is such a big issue. The penalty to attack rolls and defenses is heavy. It is mainly an issue with ranged attackers fighting in open spaces but unless the entire party has it, it is not that bad.

I'm surprised dragonborns don't grow tails before they get wings.

Before reading PHB1, I thought the reason dragonborns didn't have tails in the previews (and looked so incredibly stupid) was that they'd grow one and get tail sweep attacks at higher levels.

I guess it was just another lame artistic choice after all (like dragonlocks or the tiefling's enormous horns and tails)
