finding invisible characters

cool hand luke

First Post
I'm running a game of death tourney, and have come upon a rules stumper.

one character has used dust of disappearance to become invisible. the other combatant is attempting to use a "run around until I run into him" approach at finding him.

The rules state that you cannot move through a square occupied by an enemy, so he's attempting to move until I tell him he can't. Now, you CAN move through a square with an ally. obviously it is in the best interest of the invisible character to let the guy slide right on by. Is there any rule, or clarification, that lets him do that?

How can you allow Dust of Disappearance in a game of death!? :D

And more importantly... why doesn't everyone have it (and a potion/scroll of True Seeing (altho even True Seeing doesn't help against the Dust))!? ;)

Anyways...

There should be almost no chance to find an invisible character by just running around like crazy, trying to run into him.

Just use the spot and listen rules in the DMG.

There are also rules for trying to "bump" into the invisible one (groping).

I don't know of any applicable rules, but in the game I run, I let an invisible character make a Reflex save to see if he can successfully let another creature (which doesn't know the invisible character is there) pass through his space without bumping into him.

By the rules, you can always run through a field occupied by someone who lets you pass through, even if this is an opponent. So if the invisible character decides to let the run-searcher pass (which would make sense), the former would not be found by the latter.

What the rules allow is to guess a field and attack it (e.g. by charging). A normal attack role is done with the correspondng miss chance.

The invisible creature simply moves to an adjacent square then.

But chances should be pretty good to locate that creature then! :)

Closest I could find was the DMG p295

A creature can grope about to find an invisible creature. A character can make a touch attack with his hands or weapon into two adjacent 5-foot squares using a standard action. If an invisible target is in the designated area, there is a 50% miss chance on the touch attack. If successful, the groping character deals no damage but has successfully pinpointed the invisible creature's current location. (if the invisible creature moves, its location, obviously, is once again unknown.)

In other words, your friend's only real chance is for the invisible opponent to run up and hit him with a sword, so he knows what square the guy's in, and can attack with a 50/50 miss chance.

Otherwise, tough luck, get ready to die :-) Sucks to be the guy in a death-match that didn't think about how to deal with invisible opponents ahead of time....

Use the spot/listen skills... then cast gliterdust... faerie fire... sprinkle dust of appearence... nuke the whole planet from space, it's the only way to be sure.

YMMV
