Firefly

I'm definitely going to check out "Firefly". I can't possibly pass on Joss Whedon's take on the vastly underutilized "space western" genre.

The only thing that makes me skeptical where "Firefly" is concerned is the re-shoot of the pilot episode. Apparently, Joss shot a two hour pilot that really went in depth on the backstory of a few of the characters. The network saw it and said "where are the explosions???", so the original pilot was shelved and a new one shot.

BTW, I think the whole prostitute thing should be considered with an eye towards the genre of traditional Westerns.

LOL! Star Trek the original series was a space western, and it's pilot was reshot as well! Too cerebral, the network said. They too used the original pilot later in the show...

Whodathunkit?

As I recall, they didn't air the original pilot as such. Rather, they had an episode where Captain Pike (now confined to a wheelchair-thingy and only being able to communicate by blinking with a lamp) got Spock to commandeer the Enterprise and bring him to the planet from the pilot.

I think what he meant was that maybe you will come to see this person as a person, with reasons for doing what she must, and in that, see the spart of humanity that connects all people.

Besides . . . Joss Whedon doesn't glorify anything, except for heroes.

When I first heard about the show I went to its website. They had some movie-interview where Mr. Whedon when he gleefully describes the shows as an action show.. with a whore! (please excuse the use of the word- his choice, not mine) Or something along those lines.

It does not give me the feeling I am going to get much insight from that show.

Err.. I have only seen a couple episodes of Buffy, but I got a distinctly different impression.

I hope everyone else enjoys it.

I'd say you saw the wrong episodes. Not that there's something wrong with someone not liking the show, but when a show develops a very strong following like this (polls on this board suggest it's one of THE most popular shows among posters here), there's probably good reason. It's also a critically acclaimed show, not just a popular one.

Me, I could never get into the Sopranos, because I only saw a few episodes and in no particular order, so I only had the vaguest idea of what was really going on.

I never use that type of reasoning- I will judge a show on its merits, not on what anyone else thinks (the masses or the critics).

I do not like Anne Rice, I did not like Titanic, and I did not like Buffy. *shrug*

Fair enough. For me, if a majority thinks highly of something, I'm willing to give it more of a chance to convince me of its worth (or lack thereof). It's more about quality than popularity. If popularity and critical acclaim are not good indicators of quality, than what is?

Note: I said indicators of popularity, not proof. Of course, everyone ultimately judges for themselves what's good and what's not.

Edit - That should be indicators of quality, not popularity.
