First 3E Adventure for 1st lev chars, any recomendations?

There have been several threads on this topic. As was mentioned, it's a FAQ.

The module that consistently gets the best recommendations seems to be Of Sound Mind. This is not an intentional plug, merely an honest attempt to recollect the previous threads on this subject.

Mind you, I havne't seen it (It's on my x-mas order list). But I'm definitely getting it.

Hello Byteboy and welcome to the Enboards!

I´ve just finished Sunless Citadel (first time DM) and it was a blast! It was no problem to run , it´s very pedagogic and easy to use. It has some typos, but nothing that you can´t adjust yourself.

My players - veterans and all of them dm:s- loved Sunless Citadel!
Even if it´s a dungeon crawl it´s full of role- playing opportunities and it gives everybody the possibility to shine.
I run it with a rogue, a cleric, a fighter and a wizard, and it worked out very well.
I do recomend that you have a cleric and a rogue in the party.
It´s a pretty hard module, so feel free to use npc:s in the Citadel
if the players wants them to join.
Keep us posted how it worked out!

I hope I am not starting to sound like Piratecat's bitch, but I must put in a word for Of Sound Mind. If you have concerns about scaling the adventure, or altering it to fit your campaign, many of the answers are included in the adventure. Better yet, PC is very available and receptive to questions. He helped me scale the adventure for 3-4 characters of 4th-5th level, with no psionics in the group. Then he even helped me tailor the adventure for online play, as we play on OpenRPG.

A good hint if you use the adventure, keep the psionics even if you don't have any psionics in the group. Better yet, conceal from the players the name of the adventure you are using (easy for me with online play) and let them try to figure out that psionics are involved.

That said, if you hate psionics there are easy instructions to convert them to normal magic for the adventure. But on PC's own advice, you can use the psionics even without the Psionics Handbook, just from the info in the adventure and the SRD.

OSM is a little tough for first level as written. With only 3 players, I would throw in an NPC, or run another 1st-level adventure first, and use it as written for 3 2d level characters.

Aside: Piratecat, you ever realize the tendency to abbreviate your name as PC, which conflicts with shortening Player Character? Complicated.

Sunless Citadel is just so-so IMHO.

Of Sound Mind rocks. So do the Coin Trilogy (Kalamar) and the Freeport Trilogy (Green Ronin).

In fact, the Coin Trilogy (The Root of all Evil, Forging Darkness, Coin´s End) seems to me the absolutely perfect introduction to D&D. It´s got an epic storyline, a great mix of combat, negotiation and puzzles, offers many varied locations (jungle, desert, seas, towns, hills, castles) and is lots of fun.

Until you begin to check if they´ve done the rules properly. They haven´t.

The Burning Plague is a very good, very short and completely free module available on the WOTC site.

My first game used it as a lead-in the the Sunless Citadel.

It worked really well.
