First Dungeons and Dragons game session

First Post
My friends are having our first play session in just a few hours. The anticipations is in danger of spilling over. I (being the DM) have prepared 3 combat encounters (one of them optional) and 3 skill encounters for my gaming group. I'm not sure how long it is going to take get through it, but I hope it will last for at least 2-3 hours. I'll let you guys know how it goes and ask for advice on what (probably) went wrong.

Awesome!

Good luck.. Remember if your campaign says that you've run into the Tarrasque to run up and give it a massive, massive hug for everyone here on the forums. :)

They made it through all 3 skill encounters and avoided the second combat encounter. We had to stop early since one of the PCs had to go to work. On total we played about 3 hours.

One of the PCs was a little frustrated because he wanted to use ghost sound (Wizard power) during a skill encounter, and I didn't know how to handle that, so I didn't allow it. Did I make a mistake?

The most important rule is the "Rule of Cool". Would it have been cool? Was it clever? Next time say yes and worry about being right afterward. Just make sure the players understand that you'll say yes, but if the rules don't back it up, you might not say yes the next time...or you might!

Did everyone have fun?

Everyone had a a blast learning combat together. The PCs didn't know each other at the beginning of the campaign, so they statrted on totally opposite sides of the map. It was awesome to see them help each other (the two eladrin teamed up as did the 2 dragonborn).

After that it took awhile for them to get used to the skill encounters, but I think they were catching on. One of the PCs was a little upset since he only has modifiers to 3 skills and none of them were primaries.

Cool! Sounds like a good time, glad the first game was successful.
