WELLINGTON, New Zealand - A fishing crew has caught a colossal squid that could weigh a half-ton and prove to be the biggest specimen ever landed, a fisheries official said Thursday.

The squid, weighing an estimated 990 lbs and about 39 feet long, took two hours to land in Antarctic waters, New Zealand Fisheries Minister Jim Anderton said.
Fitting the "truth is stranger than fiction" department, this thing is longer than the description of the Giant Squid in the Monster Manual, and not that far off from the friggin' Kraken! (Minus the ability to control weather, of course. :)) So it's bigger than a Giant Squid, but smaller than a Kraken, what would you say this thing is? CR 10? Maybe 16HD? Or should it be a new creature entry, the "Colossal Squid" (that isn't really Colossal?)

It could be a giant squid advanced up to the 19-36 HD (Gargantuan) range.

But it depends on what "39 feet long" means... whether or not it includes the tentacles, which i suspect it does.

990 pounds puts it solidly in the Large category. However...

The Huge-sized giant squid in the SRD has a 20 ft long body, and a 30 ft. reach overall with its tentacles... Probably about 40-50 ft long, if you include the tentacles.

If the real squid's 39 feet includes the tentacles, it would probably be on the slightly small side of Huge, which jibes with the game stats just fine.

I was surprised in the report that they diffentiated between the "colossal" squid just found and the "giant" squid that everyone's been looking for years now.

All we need now is the gargantuan squid!

All the giant squid shows I've seen include the tentacles in the length of the creature.
