Flames of War?

I've been tempted to buy the starter set, but have (so far) decided against it. I suspect I'd enjoy it, but right now my wargaming is mostly focused on Field of Glory (Ancients & Medieval).

But who knows, with a new edition coming out, they might successfully tempt me.

How do you like Field of Glory?

How do you like Field of Glory?
I am having a great time with Field of Glory. The rules are pretty good, and quite playable. The rulebook and army list books are gorgeous, which is nice. One criticism I have of the rulebook is that the organization has associated rules spread out in different chapters without any cross-reference numbers. At best, it might say something like "see the rules for interpenetrations." Compounding this problem is the index, which is poor. However, there is a fan-made index you can download that is excellent and works around the problem. And once you start getting the rules down it becomes less of an issue, of course.

I'm not really into the tournament scene. I like fighting generally historically plausible/appropriate battles using the points system. And I like trying a variety of different armies. That's led me to fly in the face of tradition: all of my personal games have been bases-only (with no minis on them). When I've played in the FLGS I've borrowed armies (beautifully painted and based, I might add). I did buy a Ptolemaic Egyptian army (Macedonian-style successor state pike army), but I haven't gotten around to painting it. And I need to buy some elephants for it.

Sadly, I don't get to play FoW as much as I would like to.

As others have stated, there is a new, 3rd edition out. Also, if you don't have anything against using miniatures from different companies there are some alternatives that could help with the costs. Old Glory's Command Decision offers a range of infantry, tanks and vehicles. The Plastic Soldier Company has some infantry and tank kits (usually sold in boxes of five). Plus, there are other models in the 15mm range from various companies (I think FoW is 15mm, excuse me if I am wrong). It just depends on what looks good to you and if you are willing to search around.
