D&D 5E Flamestrike and Stalker0's little adventure

You're not proficient in Religion (only the Cleric is), but I will allow you a History check.

Make a Perception check for the Raven, at disadvantage due to the dim light (full moon).
Pretty sure requiring proficiency is an old edition rule good sir, nothing in the book requires it that I’ve seen. I am as smart as Einstein, my mind is a spong for tons of information.

ravens rolls a 1 on perception.

history check is: total 10

phb173-176 is unclear either way given the frequency to lean on gm decides & ask your gm type language, but AL & the hardcovers often include words along the lines of "if characters are proficient in X they can attempt t [do Y] DC##" so it's probably an interpretation wotc at least endorses as acceptable at worst & it's definitely a common ruling for a gm to say you need tp be trained in x to do x for some skills

The DM decides when a check is allowed, and what ability score and proficiency bonus to use if so.

In this case (information you find out from the Dwarf Cleric) the temple was an ancient Dwarven monastery, originally dedicated to Dumathoin (a deity of underground exploration). The Dwarves were corrupted somehow by a Demon Lord named Ugudenik (He who lurks below) and the Order disbanded as apostates and heretics.

Man, get yourself some new dice :)

The Raven reports it cant see any way in.

Your History check tells you that the Temple has been abandoned for a long time.

The Fighter adds to this ominously that it has been abandoned for exactly 999 years... but he has also heard tales of adventurers who have explored the place since it was abandoned, including recently, so there must be a way inside (History check 16)

The Rogue advances and scouts the doorway. He reports back that the stonework on the wall where the trail connects to the wall seems to be slightly different to the stone surrounding it. Almost as if the stone itself had melted from the walls and filled in the doorway but he is unsure what this means (Perception 16, Investigation 8).

He turns to you and asks you if you have any idea?

The Bard borrows a spare rope from the Cleric, and starts tying them together, with a grappling hook on the end, and spools it over his shoulder, looking for a spot to climb.

What do you do?

Here is your party BTW:

Valor Bard 5/ Paladin 2; Half elf (Gold elf, cantrip Greenflame blade), Str + Cha build; Half plate of Fire resistance, bag of holding, shield, longsword. Soldier background. Expertise in Athletics, Perception, Dueling F/S, Feat: +2 Cha

Life Cleric 7; Dwarf, Str, Con, Wis build, Full Plate, shield +1, warhammer, pearl of power, Acolyte background. Feat: Artificer initiate (Booming blade, absorb elements)

BM Fighter 7, Vuman, Str, Cha build. Full plate +1, Greatsword +1, Noble background, Feat: Skill expertise (+1 Str, Expertise Persuasion), GWM, +2 Str), Commanders strike, Distracting strike, Maneuvering attack, Rally, Commanding presence, Precise strike)

Scout Rogue 7, Vuman, Dex build, +1 Longbow, Elven cloak, Outlander background, Feats: Alert, +2 Dex, Expertise: Survival, Nature, Stealth, Perception, Acrobatics, Investigation, Thieves tools.

The Wizard considers all of the information. Based on who the god is to and what the temple is for, the proper path does not seem up....but down. I will use investigate (Roll: 13+7 = 20) and have the others look also, look to the ground for holes, passages, or secret tunnels that may lead underground.

Also is there any dwarven script on the walls?

Actually, Instead of Investigate, make me an Arcana check.

Same bonus, so still a 20.

I'll let you keep the same roll, that's fine (also - I play it that all you need to do is describe what your character does, as the DM I'll tell you if there is a check to be made, what ability score to use, and if a proficiency applies).

As you investigate the wall in front of you, you notice the same phenomena the Rogue did - but you also (thanks to your Knowledge of Arcana, that the Rogue did not have) realize that there was once a doorway here and likely also a stone door. The door seems to have been recently blocked over and fused into the doorframe with a Stone Shape spell, which explains the molten look to it.

Fine by me, I was just trying to speed things up so you don't have to spend a post telling me to do X, then I spend a post doing X, and then you tell me what happens. These play by posts take long enough as it is:) If you would rather I just wait for you to tell me to make a check, that is fine.

I will gather the group over and show them the spot. "Its here everyone, though magic was used to cover it up, the entrance is still here, we just have to find a way to break through the rock. I shall provide us a fortification that will hold off intruders while we work, but we will need to muscle to break through".

Hoping that the burly fighters can do some rock breaking, I will do a ritual Leomund's tiny hut around the area, to ensure we are not disturbed (unless we think this is like a 1 minute just slam it with pickaxe kind of thing). Once the sphere is up, I will start using mold earth to help remove the dirt from around the rock and opening up space to work (probably using the "help" action with mold earth).
