Ok, my game is playing in the FR, currently the players are walking in the North above Silverymooon.
I want to make some major changes in the area... cause i don't like "peaceful" places :)

I want to open a gate to the Scarred Lands or something like that, and that one/serveral clans of Slitheren (Ratman/skaven) enter the realms...

I don't know much about the Ratman, but what i do know of them is that they are organized in serveral clans, they like to eat, swarm and are intelligent.... even some use magic!

What changes would these Ratman would have on the region?

Would they stay where they are? and don't changes much
Would they breed like mad-rats and cause hunger/war in the region?
Would they drive out the origional population like orcs or other things i don't know that live there....?
Which clan should i use (in the case of Slitheren)?
What would the ratman seek in the realm? (easy food or something else)
Would they make war on the Silvermarches/Silverymoon?

p.s. You could switch Slitheren also with Skaven or something... to me they are the same.

I like to have as much imput as possible, ALL your ideas are very welcome!!!

Robert.

Sounds like an interesting idea.

I can't offer any insights, though, because I know less about these creatures than you do! :)

Thats not a problem :)
I could also state my the question like this:
You have ratmen (like humanoidlike-rats) and they enter MY realm through a gate.
They are evil, they are smart, there are a lot of them, they need food...

What problems would they cause in the region?

The place is subartic/temperate mountains/forests.
There live a lot of humanoid races who are not aligned to each other... (make war on each other).
The great city of Silverymoon is not far away to the south, a city of great magic and prosper (but every great place will fall with time! *Evil grin*).

What effect would intelligent ratmen cause to the region??

Robert

p.s. this is "MY" FR, so Elminster and his friends won't come to help! :D i just use the geography

Hmm...

Not sure about what temperatures would suit them (check out their original climte and see how similar that is to the climate/terrain they are going to). If it is largely different, then an initial goal of these creatures would be to be comfortable in the environment ( this could be as simple as some endure element spells or something).

If the other races of the area are frequently at war/skirmish - then (using rats as a model) they would could make great scavengers for what is left at a battle seen (eating flesh if they like that - plus picking through equiment on fallen soldiers).

A natural progression from there would be them instigating more minor skirmishes so that they can take the left overs. (they need not be the agressors - they could trick two sides that the other is preparing hostile actions, etc.).. again, all in the goal of having more skirmishes for them to pick through.

I think they would stay away from the big powerful city until they knew they could surive...

basically, i see them having a survival of the fittest mentality. Their mannerisms would make them great scavengers. While their intelligence and lack of moral concern for others (evil alignment) would make them play different groups against one another to serve their needs.

someone else may have an entirely different take on it.

I'll think about it more. and post later if I think of something useful :)

The gate could swing both ways. The north is bracing for another Orc horde. Lets say the horde slams instead upon the recovering civilzations of the scarred lands.

You could have the PCs crossing into both worlds to find the items to close the gates, and return most of the new invaders to their respective worlds.

Think about some of the ecological damage this could wreak. And the resulting weak barriers between the two worlds, so dragons from the North could push into the scarrred lands, maybe eat a piece of one of the fallen Titans and come back to the north....

Finding and closing down those barriers could be a campaign in and of itself.

Would the Fey'ri and the Tanarukk find secret havens from persecution in the shattered lands? What would a fey'ri do with the blood of a Titan? Would the elves of that new world now become potential breeding stock?

What would happen if the Herald of Vangal were to push into the North? Or the Carnival Krewe, or most dangerous of all, the demigoddess Drendari finding a way into Faerun?
