Follower Stastics

Followers, you know, those little guys you get with the leadership feat: How do you make up their statistics.

I'm guessing that they should not be elite, so followers shouldn't get maximum hitpoints at first level, but I'm not sure abou this.

Since you end up with alot of followers, rolling 3d6 for all their stats seems too hard. Does 15 point buy seem appropriate, since it corresponds to 10.5 in each stat?

The DMG says followers get the normal wealth for an NPC of their level, so a first level warrior comes with 900gp of stuff, and a 2nd level guy gets 2000gp of stuff. Does this seem like alot? You can have a whole army loaded down with potions for this price?

When we did this in the campaign I am playing in, we made the Cohort using standard PC generation rules and followed the same standards for PCs. We gave the Followers avearge hit points per level, rounding up on odd levels and down on even levels.

We made them using a straight 3d6 roll for each ability with no rearranging of stats. That makes you work with the Follower's abilities rather than creating the optimal set of NPC Followers.

To properly equip a Follower that isn't all that much money. For a Warrior, you probably want him to have a Brestplate or Chain Mail, Large Steel Shield, Masterwork Weapon, Bow and maybe a Light Warhorse. That will eat up most of his first level funds right there.

For Followers I just use Jamis' NPC generator.

I set the Race to be the same as the characters.
I set the Alignment to be Any Good (assuming the character in question is of a good alignment)
I set the Primary Class to be any PC Class (you may want to just make it any).
Set the Level to what it should be.
Set Ability Score Gen method to Straight 3d6.

Then I use the NPC Equipment Generator for the equipment.

To save time, you could just use the example NPCs in the DMG.

I'm referring to followers, not cohorts.

Followers can only be warriors, commoners, and experts acording to the DMG. There are no sample characters of these types, and the DMG doesn't say what kind of stats they should have, or whether they get max hp at first level. I'm assuming that since you get so many followers, they are probably pretty average overall.

Huh, never noticed that before. Still, for warriors at least, you could still use the example fighter stats -- just strike out the bonus feats at every 2nd level. 25-point buy seems fair enough for experts, and 15-point buy for commoners. Offhand, though, I can't really see the stats for these guys as likely to make that much of a difference. You're not going to take them into the dungeon with you, presumably, and situations involving big battles are unwieldy to handle in D&D anyway.
