The thing is, that cast was great. I haven’t been nearly so keen on a lot of the newer characters.

Oh, it's a tough challenge, to be sure. If they had known they were going so many seasons, I suspect they would have either had the time jumps be shorter or have gone with an anthology-style cast, where each season focused on new actors and new characters.

It seems like one or the other would have been better, but the show is still surprisingly good, all things considered.

I think for me the further it goes, the further it moves from the romantic image of pioneering space exploration at NASA to generic sci-fi, and it loses something along the way. Going to the moon in tin cans while people back home smoked and wrote equations on whiteboards in the 1970s, with all the period costumes, cars, sets... while it's becoming more a CGI space drama now. Which I get--the premise is that it goes through the decades, but obviously as the decades pass and it drifts further and further away from 'reality' it loses that vibe it started with.

The glamour of the 60s/70s era is very well done, with scenes like the astronauts racing their corvettes to the bar. Almost had a kind of Mad Men in Space vibe in places.

I like how the timeline was progressed: women’s emancipation seems greater; gay rights hugely impeded. Fusion rockets, but much less miniaturisation etc. Soviet Union still intact. And nods to random things like John Lennon not dying after the assassination attempt.

I was under the impression that it was always planned to be a season per decade with a 5-6 season arc.

Yeah great show, I agree that every season has been a little less but still a wonderful ride
