D&D 5E (2014) [+] Forgotten Realms: Where to start for 5e?

Ok. It's readily apparent (since they came right out and said so! :heh: ) that WotC is going to focusing on the Forgotten Realms for quite some time. I'm a Forgotten Realms newb for the most part. I mean I own the Silver Box which I bought way back when it was actually new. Read it but never used it. Now with all the adventures and such based in the Forgotten Realms I thought I'd actually take the plunge and let my adventures for my group take place in the Forgotten Realms some time in the future.

(Not at the moment though as I have a group trapsing happily through Greyhawk at the moment.)

So... where to start for 5e? I ask because I know that there have been big changes to FR over the decades and I'd like to have my adventures take place in the current year/age/what-have-you. (I'll be buying the Sword Coast Adventures (?) when it's published.)

I own all the stuff published by WotC for 5e, but was wondering if anyone knew of any hidden treasures that'll help me out.

This is NOT a thread to convince me not to use FR. I'm not even remotely interested in what you hate about the FR (hence the + in the title) that makes it "suck." Constructive criticism on how to mesh things together or make things work better are welcome though.

I'm a dude who wants to use the FR sometime in the future and needs some help.
thanks for starting this thread and denoting it as positive for fans of the FR, I'm getting quite sick and tired of recent hate threads.

I'm using a lot of the 3.5 books for my 5e campaigns, which are excellent, particularly Lords of Darkness.
I would also recommend Ed Greenwoods FR and if you can find it the Grand History of the Realms.

I will echo the suggestions for the 3rd edition books. The 3rd edition FR Campaign Setting book is excellent and one of my go to books for campaign creation. Also, I rely heavily on the 3rd edition Lords of Darkness for fleshing out the various antagonistic factions.

Some that's fairly recent, but NOT a 5E book is Murder in Baulder's gate. It was a (mostly) edition neutral adventure that came out during the playtest. The adventure was basically the opening of the Sundering, with the return of one of the dead gods. It's IMO, the best adventure put out by WotC, but I felt it would be better at higher level (set for level 1+, which is too low for the types of foes you face). Additionally, it comes with a companion book detailing the city which is so good that I know a couple of DMs who bought it just for that! Definitely a gem if you like FR.

This thread has really reminded me of the strength of the Realms: the hidden gems.

Princes of the Apocalypse was set in a region previously untouched by story and only sparsely detailed. And my own choice of Asbravn goes back to the 1e grey boxed set (page 26 of Cyclopedia of the Realms) and has never seen any love. And it's right in the middle of a fairly diverse area of the setting. A perfect home base. But nada.
