Which version of FR is your favorite? (I ask because I stumbled across a sealed 1e FR boxed set this afternoon for $9.00, and am wondering if I got a good deal).

The more material there is for the Realms the better. It doesn't matter on edition. Play the most current edition you have and draw inspiration for your campaign from all the Realms material you have. Your game will be richer for it.

Yes, you got a good deal.

A very good deal.

My favorite FR is the 2nd Ed Box set (though I augment it with the Old Fogoteen Realms Adventures Hardcover.

I just liked the Greater Overall Detail presented in the 2nd Box Set. If you plan on staying in the Waterdeep/Heartlands areas the 1st ed set is the best.

Generally, I agree, but I've seen the Time of Troubles hailed as one of TSR's greatest sins by huge numbers of gamers in the not too distant past. Generally, I like FR 3e, because it leaves that whole mess far enougn in the past that I can ignore it. Likewise, I enjoy FR 1e, becuase the ToT hasn't happened yet. The implementation of the ToT really bugged me on a lot of levels. Naturally, YMMV and all that - I'm just wondering if the general opinions that I recall hearing a few years back still hold true.

I very much like the pre time of troubles era, campaigns I run take place around the 1350's but I pull material I like from every edition.

Though I voted for the first option, I really like the 3e FR book, too. This means that, in my case, it would be wrong to count a vote for the 1e boxed set as a vote against the 3e book ;).

To me, the Realms is the Realms. I've been playing in a Realms campaign for the past ... sheesh... nearly two years, and I get info from all the previous edition sourcebooks.

My preference is for 3e rules, but the published info is quite portable. That said, I have very fond memories of the day I bought that 1e box set; after all the years of enjoying Greenwod's articles in DRAGON, I would finally have the curtain drawn back to see the bigger picture behind all of it.

Same here. That was when I was big into the Realms. The Time of Troubles had just happened, and much was still uncertain.

That's not to say that the 3e stuff is bad or anything. I enjoy it as well. To me, though, there's a different feel between the 2e and 3e Realms.

Ah, Daggerford. How I miss thee. *sniff*
