I know that the Time of Troubles was a Big Mistake (tm) that TSR made, but since I never played in or knew anything about the Realms until 3rd Edition, it has defined for me what Forgotten Realms is. I voted 3E, but in truth that is mostly because of the regional focus.

I prefered the 2nd ed era for the Realms. Was more detailed than the old 1st ed grey box, but didn't have all the baggage yet that FR would accumulate.

I still have my old grey box FR set. Might have to dig it out after reading this.

What the hell are you talking about? 2E is where all the baggage came from.

Which version of FR is your favorite? (I ask because I stumbled across a sealed 1e FR boxed set this afternoon for $9.00, and am wondering if I got a good deal).
Yes. I voted 3e, but the 1e boxed set is excellent too, and well worth getting.

The introductory adventures in it are really cool too.

It was just all around bad. The entire experience felt like it was cooked up by a fourteen year old who thought it'd be 'kewl'.
Well, at the time it was going on, I was (approximately) a 14 year old. And I thought it was cool.

I'm not such a fan now as I was back then, but I still don't think it was the WORST. THING. EVAR. as a lot of people seem to. :D

Yeah, I'm thinking about running these with Old School (TM) this coming weekend. I think that it might be a good testing ground for the Old School system.

I greatly preferred before the Time of Troubles. There are some very good books set after this period, though. The only 3e FR book I own is Waterdeep, and it's pretty good.
