Fortification on armor and shields.

Does the fortification ability of armor and shields stack.

I.E.

Full plate, moderate fortification (75%)
Shield, light fortification (25%)

100%?

Thx

I think not. The AC bonuses from armor and shields stack, yes, but most other defensive abilities (energy resistance, damage reduction, spell resistance etc etc) never stack.

I was thinking maybe they don't stack. Like armor bonuses, you'd just take the best of the two, thus wasting the weaker ability.

I'd be inclined to check them both.

However, this isn't just an issue with Fortification, what about elemental resistance? A shield of fire resistance and armor of fire resistance would provide 10 or 20 points of fire resistance?

Now, that, I think I'd say would act like Endure Elements and Protection from Elements at the same time.

They both resist the fire damage... unfortunately they both resist the same fire damage, point by point.

I know I'm being inconsistent, but for some reason the fortification thing feels different.

I think the answer lies within concealment. If you have blur (20% concealment) and a Cloak of Major Diplacement (50% concealment) at the same time. Do you take the best of the two or the better of the two?

IMO, you take the better of the two and I feel the same about Fortification.

No IMO about it, that's exactly how multiple concealments work.

Okay, you've convinced me :) No stacking in any way of Fortification :)

In the design of 3E supposedly percentages are used to donate conditions which cannot be improved, static conditions I guess. That puts fortification in a somewhat different arena than normal stacking rules. I agree with Hypersmurf it feels like it should be check one, and then the other. I know that if someone is blurred and blinking I do both. As far as blurred and displaced I haven't been in that situation, but I could see checking one then the other. Of course total darkness offers a 50% miss chance, so I may have to think about that.
