Free Adventure Path

So, the reputation of the author played a part in the decision to use them (certainly fair enough) but was that prior to actually reading any of them or did you just read the ones by authors you knew you'd likely enjoy? Did you take the time to check out any of the other authors and, if so, which ones?

I probably read through 8-10 others, but my game had little access to the frozen north, or desert enviornment so most of the ones Kesh used got rejected out of hand. Others depended on monsters unseen in my homebrew. I know anything with psionics got a look, as well as the following:

Secret of the Windswept Wall, The
Fang, Beak & Claw
Shoals of Intrigue
Fallen Angel
Start at the End
Eye for an Eye

but none seemed right for one reason of another.
Overall its been pretty handy, the adventures get used when I run short on planning time.
My current campaign is even further from generic so I haven't looked over the list recently.

Here's a campaign path I put together using mostly the free adventures, along with a few old 2e modules and the occasional Dungeon article. This particular one is a cold-themed path, perhaps resulting from an evil ritual designed to plunge the world into ice, or coming into alignment with a plane of cold, etc.

(1-2) Unearthing the Past*
(2-3) The Dead of Winter*
(3-5) Touch of Death {reversed from desert to arctic}
(5-9) Dark of the Moon
(7-8) Into the Frozen Wastes*
(8-9) Fang, Beak & Claw*
(9-10) Tiger's Palace*
(10-11) Crumbling Hall of the Frost Giant Jarl*
(11-12) The Road to Oblivion*
(12-13) Thicker Than Water*
(13-15) A Frigid Demise*
(14-15) Ill Wind in Friezford*
(15-17) Glacier Season [Dungeon #87, pg. 77]
(17-18) Haunting Lodge*
(18-20) An Icy Heart*

Critical Threats - Cold Storage [Dungeon #96, pg. 12]

* Free adventure from the website.

Dammit, Kesh! Now I HAVE to buy Frostburn...

;)

Something's Cooking . . . . Andy Collins . . . . 2nd Generic D&D

I ran this one, and it was a lot of fun! Highly recommended as a sidetrek.

Eye for an Eye, An . . . . Monte Cook . . . . 8th Generic D&D

This was fun and entertaining as well. Very well setup.

Tower of Deception, The . . . . Monte Cook . . . . 9th Generic D&D

An excellent sidetrek for a failed teleport roll.

Burning Plague, The . . . . Miguel Duran . . . . 1st Generic D&D
Ran this with some changes to make the encounters more varied - it proved pretty brutal because of them, even though the party was 2nd level. For 1st level characters, this one is pretty tough even as written.

Something's Cooking . . . . Andy Collins . . . . 2nd Generic D&D
Made cosmetic changes to the golem so it was not quite so silly, otherwise ran it as is. Went OK.

Ettin's Riddle, The . . . . JD Wiker . . . . 2nd-3rd Generic D&D
Ran it mostly as written, though with a larger plot around it to explain why the PCs had gone to that town. They showed no interest in solving the riddle and just hit the ettin with swords until he died :)

Secret of the Windswept Wall, The . . . . Eric Haddock . . . . 2nd-4th Generic D&D
Sorta ran it. I made Sionaas a much more likeable character and introduced him several sessions before running this. Memorable mainly for the less-than-PETA-approved means by which the PCs considered attracting the burrowers to the surface.

Manifesting: A Tale . . . . Angel Leigh McCoy . . . . 3rd Generic D&D
Ran this together with another free adventure (from MEG I think), but with the basic plot of this still in place. It went pretty well, though the PCs spent a lot of time suspecting everyone except the real culprit :)

Base of Operations . . . . Ed Stark . . . . 5th Generic D&D
Just used the map. The PCs got toasted :)

Into the Frozen Wastes (Eric Cagle) was excellent.
The Crumbling Hall of the Frost Giant Jarl (Andy Collins) is a goody as well.

I also liked Raiders of the High Citadel (Skip Williams web enhancement for Races of Stone).

We were fine with that adventure. The paladin killed a baby, but it was an accident. :)

But we didn't keep the Keep as our base of operations. It was way out in the middle of nowhere and I knew we'd just have to spend all of our time defending it against bugbears and whatnot.

Looks like you have a good campaign going and have some great plans for it. How many players? Are these people you have GM'd before? It sounds like you sit behind the screen fairly regularly.

Thanks to everyone who has posted so far! I'm keen to hear more, too! :)

Yeah, this is my first "whole-hearted" effort at creating a homebrew. It borrows a bit from the classics (Middle Earth, FR, Dragonlance, and Greyhawk), but I am attempting to give it a unique flavor. I want to start a war so I can use some Heroes of Battle ideas, but I don't want it to be the only driving force in the campaign. Tomb of Horrors will play into some of the history behind the war...

4 regular players with a 5th that comes in from out of town when he can. This is something that I insisted on at the beginning (a small group). We typically have 6+ players and it slows down everything. Honestly I didn't even want a 5th player, but he's a good guy and is willing to drive 2 hours to play. I have ran games for them before, the most recent was a short-lived D20 Modern/Future game. They really liked it, but I wasn't happy with it...

I do the majority of my gaming from behind the screen, not neccesarily by choice, but I enjoy it. I forget what it's like to simply play on a regular basis. I am learning how to tweak my style and make the job easier though.

Its tempting me to pull out Frost and Fur as well.
My work here is done. :D

Both of those, with the adventures above, seem to make a great basis for a campign. I just wish I had a group to try it on.

Thanks, again, to everyone who posted information on the various adventures (so far and in the future). Keep track of this thread (bookmark) and if you see someone else post anything about one of these adventures, please point them over here and ask them to add that same information so we can build up DM's think tank on them. I'll add new adventures to the top post as they become available, too.

Thanks!
