Free Cleric Domain Spell Castings?

I am considering to allow clerics to freely assign domain spells in regular spell slots (but requiring at least one domain spell at each spell level). This would obviously strengthen the cleric, but I feel that it enables him to much more represent the domains his god grants him - and that he is supposed to represent as aspects of his god.
The trouble is, this will allow clerics to cast many powerful spells - say, burning hands, almost as many times a day as a sorcerer. Clearly this is too powerful, and I am stomped on ideas on how to impelement this change without overtunring the balance of the campaign.
So I turn to the boards, seeking the advice of my peers....

Anyone?

Here's what I do. Instead of spontaniously casting cure spells they spontaniously cast their domain spells.

So, far this has worked very well.

Otherwise, with what you're doing, I'd limit their spell list.

call me crazy ...

but I thought that cleric's domain spells became part of their known spells ...

so if (say at lvl1) a domain spell was burning hands ... that cleric could pray for it 4x (at 3rd lvl: 2 normal +1 domain +1 cha bonus(13)).

if that happens to be burning hands then so be it. note, that character could swap out the 2 normal + 1 cha for healing if s/he wanted to ... domain slots must cast domain spells.

will try to read up and repost though

only half crazy

PhB p156 "If a domain spell is not on the Cleric Spells List, it can only be prepared in a domain slot."

okay, ... I like Crothians option ... gives domains a bit of a boost ...

It does and it allows clerics to look unique depending on their domains. And, the real reason i did it, it really limits healing spells. :D

and makes clerics definitely more specialized :) ... my brother had a cleric of Kord with war&str (war not standard I know) ... he spent so many of his spells on healing ... he would have rather spent them on smiting enemies ...

your simple change reminds me of specialty clerics!

It does add a little bit of speciality to clerics. It's not my idea, technically. I stole it from one of the great many posters we have here. It was over a year ago and as much as I'd love to give credit to were credit is due, I can't recall who it was.

Should be a new meta-magic feat.

Domain Generalization

Divine caster with access to any Domain may memorize a Domain spell as part of their regular spell alottment.

A generalized domain spell uses up a spell slot one level higher then the actual spell.

Just a thought...
