D&D 5E Free League's Lord of the Rings RPG Comes To 5E

Last year, Free League Kickstarted the new version of The One Ring, the official tabletop RPG set in Middle Earth. It made over $2M on Kickstarter, making it the 7th biggest TTRPG Kickstarter in history. Now it's time for the 5E-powered version. This one won't be hitting Kickstarter, but you will be able to pre-order it this fall for a release in 2023. As noted by Alex Clippinger on Twitter...

As noted by Alex Clippinger on Twitter, this isn't an update of Cubicle 7's Adventures in Middle Earth -- "People asked about the previous 5E adaptation in the showcase and FL clarified that this is a distinct 5E adaptation of their own One Ring system and shouldn’t be thought of as a new adaptation/version of C7’s Adventures in Middle Earth (sorry AiME lovers!)"

Free League Announces The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying For 5E

“This is the Master-ring, the One Ring to rule them all.”

The path to Middle-earth will soon open for new adventurers. We are thrilled to reveal that the acclaimed second edition of The One Ring™ roleplaying game is coming soon in a 5E adaptation, entitled The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying.

The new edition of The One Ring™ RPG, set in the world of The Lord of the Rings™ by J.R.R. Tolkien and designed by Francesco Nepitello and Marco Maggi, became the most successful tabletop roleplaying core game ever on Kickstarter when it ended March 4, 2021. Now the time has come to open Middle-earth for even more roleplayers with a brand new 5E adaptation.

The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying contains everything you need to create exciting 5E adventures set in the world’s most popular fantasy setting: six original heroic cultures from the land of Eriador, six new classes, a host of terrifying adversaries, and comprehensive rules for journeys, councils, wondrous artefacts, and the subtle magic of Middle-earth.

The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying core compendium will enter pre-order this fall, alongside a scenario module entitled Shire Adventures. A pre-order will give you immediate access to a full PDF of the products. The retail release of both is planned for Q1 2023.

This is well known, but I was talking about the full expression of the AiME rules.
I assume that since they lost the Tolkien license it's done. We won't ever see it again. it's not like you can buy Desipher's version anywhere except the secondary market.

I am working on a 5e conversion project of a pretty well known thing, and one of the discussions we are having is how far from the baseline do you go during the design process. how compatible should Thing X be with 5E and other 5e compatible things. It is definitely a point of serious consideration.
Something I had to wrestle with when I dragged my Majestic Wilderlands setting from AD&D 1e to Fantasy Hero then to GURPS and then in the past decade my classic D&D based Majestic Fantasy rules and 5e.
The key trick is to figure out what players like to do in the setting, and what level of detail those things could be represented at in the system then hack away.

For example, not all the nuances of how things worked when I ran things with GURPS made it over to my Majestic Fantasy RPG. But some of it came back when I wrote up some 5e stuff for my setting. But in both players pretty much did the same things for the same reasons with the same result. My setting getting trashed ;)

No, the license is held by Sophisticated Games, C7 never had it. SG negotiated a deal with C7 do develop and publish the game.
This is correct to the best of my knowledge -- SG's has the license from Tolkien Enterprises and C7 was the publisher. C7 ended the publishing agreement with SG, right before their version of TOR 2.0 was set to get mailed out, for reasons never made public. Only mentioning this by way of explanation for new folks, not trying to sound negative/make drama in any way. Wish the best to all involved.

I love what SG and FL have done with things, and am very thankful that the middle-earth RPG line didn't just completely die out.

C7 makes awesome stuff like their WH40K W&G RPG and being able to buy the out of print Rogue Trader RPG PDF's they now have license to on DT RPG was an unexpected delight as well. Especially in light of the new RT computer RPG OwlCat is working on.

Only a little off-topic, practically almost it isn't.

Embracer Group is the owner of Fantasy Flight/Edge Entertaiment, the publishers of "Legend of the Five Rings" or "Midnight" setting, among different videogame studios.

Since they own FF, that means they have access to the wonderful stuff from the Journeys in Middle Earth board game? Lots of stuff there to be mined for shows/movies, etc
