[IMAGER]http://www.enworld.org/forums/images/pdfpubs/rpgobjects.jpg[/IMAGER]This weeks's Friday Five is with Chuck of RPG Objects:
Give us an overview of your product lines.
[bq]At RPGObjects we currently have three main product lines, two that are fairly well established and a third that we have just launched and are trying to build up.
Our original, and still most popular product line would be Darwin's World. The flagship of that line is the Darwin's World Hardcover, containing everything you need to run a Post-Apocalyptic game in the d20 Modern system. This has gotten a great response both from new players and from player's of the original game which was strictly based off of the d20 engine, not the d20 Modern engine.
To support this massive game we have updated a bunch of the support products released for the original game, including Cave of Life (a free introductory adventure) and Metal Gods (a robot sourcebook- both as monsters and for playing them). We have also released a completely new product, the Foundationists, which details one of the factions of the game's core setting, the Twisted Earth.
Our second most popular line would be our Blood series for d20 Modern and the cornerstone of this line would be Blood and Fists and Blood and Guts. What we try to do with our Modern books is take one aspect of d20 Modern that will be popular in everyone's game, but could also be the focus of an entire campaign, and give the game master and players all the rules to make it happen in a fun and exciting way.
For instance Blood and Fists took on martial arts, and provided new classes, feats, and a complete campaign model to allow it to be given a little more depth, or become the focus of an entire campaign. But we did something different than any other martial arts system for d20 has ever done: we used real world styles (over 40 of them) gave you their real histories, who created them, when, and why, and then translated them into the d20 Modern rules set.
For Blood and Guts we took the same approach with the American military, breaking down all the special operations forces, giving you their history, and then classes, feats, weapons, vehicles, and optional rules to bring those histories to life.
It's our goal to support each of these two pillars of our Modern sourcebooks, but so far Blood and Guts has gotten the most attention support wise, with the War on Terror campaign model, giving you classes, feats, and information to take the fight to terrorists around the world, and In Her Majesty's Service, detailing the special operations forces of Great Britain. As the son of a Briton and WWII Commando I'm especially glad to have added the last to the Blood and Guts line.
Our final product line, just recently launched would be our Legends line, which takes RPGObjects into fantasy for the first time. Legends of Excalibur, the flagship in this line provides you with classes, feats, NPCs, new magic items, orders of knighthood, a bunch of beautiful maps, and everything else you need to explore the realm of Arthurian legend for a 2 week pickup game all the way through a never ending campaign.[/bq]
Tell us at length about your most recent project (upcoming or just
released).
[bq]Well for Darwin's World we have New World Order, a massive adventure written by the creator of the game, Dominic Covey. This adventure is the second in an ongoing campaign that started with the Wastelords, which was originally released for the first edition of the game. In addition to releasing New World Order we will be updating the Wastelords to DW 2nd edition, which will be free in PDF form to all who bought the original module.
For the Blood series we are next releasing a follow-up to the most popular book in that line, the aforementioned Blood and Fists. This book will double the number of styles, provide more classes and maneuvers, and give more campaign models featuring martial arts.
Finally Legends of Excalibur will see its debut in print form (the PDF is already out) and it will be released as a hardcover this April.[/bq]
What is your main target audience?
[bq]Our main audience would have to be d20 Modern players and GMs. Although we have recently branched out into fantasy, most people know us for making some of the best d20 Modern products out there. And that's just fine with us. Although not many publishers have supported the Modern rules engine, we think it's a fantastic set of rules and have been very gratified by the way our Modern products have sold, the critical praise they have garnered (including some 5 star ENWorld staff reviews and some ENnie nominations) as well as the recognition from the fans of the game.[/bq]
What is the main thing about your company that makes you most proud?
[bq]I'd say what makes us the most proud is the recognition we have received for making products at a consistently high level of quality and value. We aren't the biggest d20 company by any stretch, but our books are noticed for providing a lot of useful game materials that are well-edited and well-playtested for a price that is often below that of similar products on the market. We have a lot of repeat customers, and the biggest trend we have seen is that people who buy one of our books seek out the older ones, and then pick up the new releases we make. There really is nothing more satisfying as a writer.[/bq]
Where do you see your company one year from now?
[bq]That's never an easy question to answer. I think our plan is not to try
to grow too quickly. We are pretty conservative from a business standpoint, concentrating on making each product good, and each product profitable. The last two years have seen our sales just about double, so if we can accomplish that again this year, I think we will look back on 2004 and think we had another great year.[/bq]
