Frostburn: what are you doing with it?

At the moment it's just sitting on my shelf. I was pondering having an encroaching ice age threat in my new campaign world though. Y'know to get away from the Global Warming bit. Technically we are still in an ice age after all.

I looked through Frost and Fur recently and it didn't really look like there was that much cultural stuff at all, really more like cuturally inspired feats, spells, and monsters.

Am I just missing something?

mmmmm Turkish Delight. Can't I have just one more piece.

What I am I doing with it nothing though I think it has a lot of potential the main problem with this is that I can rarely get my pc's to stay in one enviroment for any period of time, adventure hooks or no.

I think you're right on. There is a lot of cultural 'crunch' but not a heck of a lot of fluff. The monster section, for example, has very short sections on the background of each monster. Whether that's good or bad is of course depends on opinion.

It seems to me that a lot of people have different perceptions of what a 'culture' RPG book should be like. Some people look at Frost and Fur and see it packed with cultural crunch they can use in their games (that was my initial impression). Some people look at it and see it devoid of any cultural background (e.g. who are, say, the Kolduni or the Domovois'). If you compare it with something like a GURPS RUssia, it certainly seems lacking in cultural background.

I personally find that I can read the fluff on the Slavic (or Viking, or Eskimo, etc) cultures in other sources, and I was OK with Frost and Fur's 'crunch-heavy' approach, though I have had to ask the author a time or two to ask for more info on a couple of things.

I have it checked out from my local library.
I love my library.
I will return it, statisfied I am missing little as my next campaign is set on tropical isles

Youre local library has new DnD books? Oh if only...

Kindled to keep my toes warm. Why have a book about the uttercold when I can just step outside, wee Montreal winters.

Actually, getting a bit of use out of it in a PbP game here, playing an Uldra druid. Other than that, don't really have plans for it, waiting on the desert book though.

I haven't really had any use for Frostburn yet, but I still think it's a good book. Then again, I always get excited when I see crunch. I still think it's a pretty good book on its own, but it's not a must-have. Lately, my players have been running around in The Plains of Purple Dust in eastern Mulhorand, so I could have used Sandstorm!

I have an ice age world that I ran as an alternate world the players visit. Should I decide to use it again, I might use Frostburn and Frost & Fur to flesh it out a little.
