Fun with Filters - help me improve my map!

First Post
I've recently created a map for Tempest, that community OGL setting started here on ENWorld. But so far, it's only a "bare bones" map created with Inkscape - you can see where the coastlines, the mountains, and the rivers are, but they don't exactly look good.

Now I want to improve the whole thing with GIMP (an Open Source Photoshop equivalent), and I could use some advice here. Can you give me any good ideas how to apply filters and fill options creatively to make good-looking oceans, rivers, and mountains from this basic image? (I want to do this primarily via filters since I want to create more maps in the future and it would save a lot of time if I didn't have to do things manually...)

Both the original map and the individual layers can be found here.
