Funny Animal D20 anyone? (MM2 rant)

Nothing productive could possibly come from this post, but I just have to get it off my chest:

First of all, I loved MM2, but...

What's with all the Disney-esque, funny-animal-type "monsters" in MM2?

toad (kuo-toa),

Did I miss any? I'm sure I did... Nevermind.

edit: spelling

Kuo toa are another fish-man one, not toads.

And you forgot hyena men gnolls

Mythic races has: animal headed men, boar men, shape changing jaguar men, big cat men with sub races for each of the big cats, insect men, Tree men, and two types of lizard men.

Minions Rebirth has: winged tiger men, german shepard men, small dragon men, fox women, and the four armed cat-men.

The Hunt Rise of evil has wolf-men.

Everquest PH has lizard men and cat men.

I think Denizens of Darkness has a cat man.

The Creature Collections have lion men, rat men, horse men and probably others.

Has anyone mentioned that orcs are basically pig- or boar-men? At least they were in their original illustrations, when they had tusks and all. Before 3e essentially invented another monster and called it an orc. They resembled pigs enough that I've heard speculations by PC's about whether "orc chops" were edible or not. My ruling was something like "if you cast purify food & drink on it, yes, but I could say that about wet cardboard too".

Well, that's a fascinating ... simplification of what actually happened in the development of the orc.

Except that pictures of orcs in other AD&D books didn't always look very piglike; I think it was one of the Slaver modules that had some very un-piglike orcs. And I don't recall the written descriptions seeming very piglike, either. I think I prefer the current orcs, really -- at least partially because they AREN'T so pig-like.

As for the x-men -- don't forget the mongrelmen, which are in ToH, IIRC. They can cover all other bases, if needed. :)

Seriously, animal-men are classics of fiction and myth; of course, using them all in one setting would be a bit much, but you can use some as inhabitants of far-off lands, and the rest can populate alternate material planes.

Get away from having humans, elves, et al., everywhere, anyways.
