Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords

- 4x games should not require a powerful video card. (A gripe I had for CivIV, but I'll still play that game.
Are you sure it was your video card that was the issue? I have a relatively old machine and it played fine. I dont even meet the minimum processor requirements, but it's only an issue if I play on Huge maps with maximum details set. I usually played in scrolled out 'Tactical mode' in any case.

I don't remember all of the settings, but it was jumpy as all get out on the main screen.

I enjoyed it for a while. I'm not actively playing it now, but I do keep up on the patches for when the mood strikes and will look into the expansion pack. (Thanks for the heads-up!)

Most of it was good, and only a few things drove me to the point of irritation. Seems like I didn't much care for trying to move around and find things on the tech tree. The big thing that I did NOT like was having to build bazillions of those constructor ships to upgrade my space stations bit by bit. It makes sense when you have the bases out in the middle of nowhere, but I really prefer the "use time and resources of a planet" that Stars! had because this way just gives way to many ships to sort through if you're looking for something in specific.

I'm giving Sword of the Stars a try now. The FTL travel is different for each race. It's also got the 3D over the 2D, but it makes it tought to find places and keep track of everything!

Since I started the thread, I'll hijack myself slightly. :p

When I saw the screenshots for SotS, I said to myself "wow, it looks like Homeworld". Well, it is in fact developed by people who worked on Homeworld: Cataclysm. :D

I'll keep an eye on it for when I will take a break from GalCiv2. This might come sooner than I expected, since I too am uninspired by the tech tree (Laser I, Laser II, ..., Laser VIII...). I don't regret my purchase considering the hours I've played, however.

Keep us posted on SotS. :)
