Something else. I got into videogame RPGs (back then, we didn't have the CRPG abbreviation), then into fantasy literature, and then into tabletop RPGs.

Books first. I was reading Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert E. Howard, J.R.R. Tolkien, Lloyd Alexander, etc. long before I thought of playing D&D.

I think that's still one of my prime dissatisfactions with D&D today, as a matter of fact, that it feels very little like those seminal writings, despite a superficial similarity.

Other I suppose. I started playing D&D when I was 11 or 12 or so, and had read The Lord of the Rings by that point, but I wouldn't say that is what got me into roleplaying. I dabbled because my friends were playing it and said it was cool. :)

I played Steve Jackson & Ian Livingstone's Fighting Fantasy from about the age of 9 so it may well be that those excellent books which were the chicken... or the egg... or whatever. :)

None of the above.

I was in grade 8 and we were madly modding Risk and delibertatley trying to invent new games using it as a "base game".

A friend had a brother who was older and was s boarda gamer (Jutland at the time as I recall) and was playing Original D&D. It went from there.

My start in fantasy came from the D&D cartoon I believe. I'm sure movies like Legend, Dragonslayer and The Dark Crystal were also an influence. After that came Dragon Warrior for the NES, Menzoberranzan for the pc, and Magic The Gathering was the last game before I really got into D&D.

As far as books go, the first fantasy book I ever owned was probably AD&D player's handbook. I didn't read LotR until I was 26.

I've been reading fantasy and sci-fi literature all my life, and watching every f/sf movie or tv show I could. I met my fiance' through a f&sf convention. He was a gamer, and he introduced me to roleplaying. Almost everyone in my social circle has roleplayed at some point. I like the idea of acting out all the fantasy characters I have running around in my head all the time (I'm a wannabe author, not a crazy person! ;) ).

Who knows... I was using action figures to set up "games" for my brothers long before I read my first fantasy novel (The Hobbit, given to me by my 5th grade teacher) or before I even heard of D&D. The games with the action figures were more complex than ye olde cops and robbers, but without the use of dice, sort of a diceless RPG before we knew what an RPG was, I guess. (You can jump this high, your character can carry whatever he can hold, etc). Depends on if you consider that gaming or not. It wasn't long after I read The Hobbit that I started playing D&D.
