Game Group Swingers

Quasqueton

First Post
All through my gaming "career" I've played/DMed with one group at a time. A few times I tried out another group outside my main, but each time it was for just one game session. (Second group always turns out to be bad/strange.)

But now-a-days I hear/read about folks playing in multiple groups. Some people play with a couple face-to-face groups and another couple online groups. This just kind of strikes me as weird. (Playing online is weird to me in itself, but I digress.)

Now, I've played different games within the same group. Like taking a break from D&D and playing Shadowrun, or Battletech, or Magic, etc. Or even alternating games each week with the same group. Or switching DMs among the group. But I've never had seperate *groups*.

So, how many people are actually a member of seperate game groups? And how many people, like me, feel that is just . . . awkward? Sort of like dating two (or more) different girls at the same time.

In college I was doing more than one group at a time. What a wild time that was, the unrestrained hedonism that is college.:)

...Dating two girls....wish it was that!

I play once a month with one group
I play a different game with same people as above once a month
I GM a FR game once a week
I am in a Pbe-mail once a week for Kalidnay
I am in a Pbe-mail once a week for Champions
I GM a PbP regulary of Darksun
I also run a seperate Story Hour of Darksun adventures

and finally....I am working on a Story Hour with a friend of mine moving away soon.

Oh- and do Hero Clix 3-4 times a month

Well theres no point to hedonism unless youre having a good time ;)

I used to go out and play with other people but I just got too damn bone lazy lately, or maybe its socially concious thing of not wanting to inflict gimped characters on other people. :)

Well let me see.

I am currently involved in Nightfall's Irregulars of Hollowfaust online on Mon. Nights, Another online dnd game that I've played in for over 2 years now on Wed. night. I've just started a play by post based in the Dusk setting. And one friday nights I go to gamers guild, where I get to play various games though currently I am playing in a lowmagic homebrew d20 game (imagine a viking renassiance, where they've mastered geothermal steam power and have conquered the sea in ships that are actually giant living mollusks).

It's not as bad as it sounds, this is what I do to relax rather than, say, watching TV.

Anyway I find the variety refreshing.

[edit: Just to throw in a little more info, I am in art school, so my schedule is weird. In some ways very demanding, in others very lax.]

I don't have enough time to play with more than one group at the moment, but when I was at University I played with about 3 different groups AND dated 3 women at the same time.

Hmm student life.

I play in Sagrabah's once-a-month Spycraft game.. Gospog's once-a-month Pulp Heroes game.. run my own game.. and play in two other regular D&D games (run by KidCthulhu & Sagiro.) Not a lot of overlap in any of those. :)

i DMed/played with the same group for 10+ years. but i also did other groups at the same time when schedules didn't conflict.

now that i've joined the turd ed ranks. i've been in 6 different groups. bounced from one to another until i found the right combination i can handle.

mostly it has to do with timing and tastes.

now, i can only game once every fortnight.

in ye olde dayes i would game 3-4hrs/ session; 5 days/week; 50 weeks per year. and did for the length of the campaign.
