Game strores near Lancaster PA?

birving

First Post
We're moving to Lancaster at the end of this month. Can anyone recommend some good game stores? We're interested in RPG's, CCG's, mini's (esp GW), as well as comics and anime.

Thanks,
Bob in Canada

Dude, I'm so sorry to hear that...

I'm originally from Lancaster/Lebanon area; I haven't been down in about two years now, but the last time I was there, they didn't have any dedicated gaming stores that I could find in the area. Anytime I wanted to buy books, I had to go to chain stores like B&N and Waldenbooks at Park City (the big mall in Lancaster).

Maybe it's gotten better in the last two years, and maybe they're opened up something more dedicated... but I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Shoot them an email and ask about their stores.

Worse comes to worse, if those don't pan out, you skip over from Lancaster county here to Chester county, and visit the WotC store over at the Exton mall, or Allied Hobbies, at the same location. The adventurous could head to King of Prussia for the Compleat Strategist, or any number of shops in Chester County.

I wish I had found these when I was there last...
They would have greatly aided in my summer boredom.

Also, about two hours northwest, here in State College, we have the Comic Swap and Nittany Line Hobbies, both of which have fairly sizeable RPG sections.

I never lived up there, but I did fly in from time to time for contract work with York Enterprises. If you have time to drive down to York, PA (its not that far) you can find a gaming store there. I can't recall the name of the store, but they did have tons of gaming material plus lots of Dwarven Forge Master Maze products. The store was at a strip mall on the same road as the Holiday Inn Express.. I wish I could remember the name for you.

Hope that helps though.

First let me say welcome to the area! I pretty much grew up in the greater lebanon area, and I'm still stuck here.

If you're looking to game, feel free to drop me a PM, or email: alan@neogodless.com

I'm not familiar with down in lancater, but I can give you some other options and my honest opinion...

The Warlord's Den
7th Street, Lebanon, PA
This place sucks. It's a hole in the wall place that really only caters to 12 year old CCG'ers. Their selection of RPG books is very limited, but they do have a fair selection of used fantasy novels.
Some tables to play in the store, but probably only minis games and CCG.

Pastimes
Route 422, Palmyra, PA
This is my local shop. It's not all too bad, but I'm not totally impressed either. They have a fair selection of RPG material, including the offbeat stuff like Gurps, old deadlands, paranoia, etc.

I think their main focus is minis, as they just took over the 'gaming' room and placed a bunch of stack of minis. So as far as I know, no room to play in store.

The Adventurer's Guild
Off of 322 in Harrisburg
Not a bad shop, but a good travel from where you're at. If you happen to be IN harrisburg, it's a great store to drop in at. People are friendly, good selection of books. Some room to play in store, but most of their games are minis (heroclix, warhammer, etc, etc). I have never seen any d20 gaming group playing in there.

Rumor has it they're looking to expand to another store, possibly in downtown Lancaster. If you have teh money to invest, they're looking for someone else to help run it for them. If not, look for a new store opening in the next year.

This place is mainly into Mage Knight and CCG like MtG, Pokemon, and Yugi Oh. You'll find very little D&D merchandise on the shelfs - but I'm sure they'ed be happy to order something for you. They have a lot of in store gaming going on (CCG and Mage Knight). They might also host D&D games, but I don't know.

This place has a good supply of D&D stuff on hand - including books, minis, & dice. They also carry CCG's and a crapload of comics and collectible stuff.

I live in Elizabethtown, which is pretty much in the middle of Harrisburg, Lancaster, York triangle, and if I had a FLGS, it would be the Adventurer's Guild in Harrisburg. Jezter6 nailed the review... good place to go, just remember that their front door is on the SIDE of the building, not the front anymore. They have less square footage than they did, so take it for what it's worth.

C&D is still in Park City, although they have moved from one of the larger spokes in the mall (Bon-ton? Boscov's?) to one of the smaller, hole-in-the-wall spokes (West? South? can never remember). This generally indicates that the store is having trouble making its rent, and (historically) they close up just a few months later. Park City, iirc, charges an exorbitant amount of money per square foot each month. LGSs just don't seem to bring in the bucks.

The Comic Store, otoh, has been around forever. If I ever bothered to figure out where they are, I'd probably go there too. :)

I live in York (well, a little town outside of York), and there are two comic stores in close proximity to each other that each carry plenty of gaming material.

Comic Store West
984 Loucks Road*
York, PA 17404 USA
(717) 845- 9198
www.comicstorewest.com

Comix Connection York
1800 Loucks Road*
West Manchester Mall
P.O. Box 8020
York, PA 17404
www.comixconnection.com

On the rare occasion I do go out looking for products, I generally visit the former.

*Loucks Road is more commonly known as (part of) Route 30.
