I've been playing Mass Effect lately, and I'm really impressed with how suitable the world is for RPG play.

Not surprising, considering that IIRC story design was done by a most excellent ENworlder, takyris!

Fallout, definitely Fallout. Whether you're in the Capital Wasteland, New Vegas, or the West Coast, there's plenty of adventure to be had.

Lots of good fantasy here, which is my usual milieu, but there are a couple solid sci-fi possibilities, too.

Metroid, as of the Prime series. Finally some worldbuilding to go with that exploration. Yeah, the games have focused on a single character, rather than party, but a party would work just as well, and you have both ancient ruins and space pirates, as well as technological "magic items."

I think the Fallout and Megami Tensei series would both make for great games.
