gamer body image/self image

I think it all goes back to the personality profile thing we did on here a while back. Most gamers are introverted thinkers. I think there were 4 main categories that we all fell into, but most were "mechanics" or "thinkers" or "scientists", which all were introverted.

... I have actually walked into gaming stores where I am not known and have been asked if I am in the right place. :p So I guess my point is that there are all types of gamers, but the stereotype holds true in a decent number of cases.

I have also had this happen at a WotC store. It was rather funny as I was debating as to which splat book I wanted to read first when one of the employees asked who I was looking to buy it for. When I said me, she asked me rather snottily if I had ever played before, to which I replied "yeah, since the basic red set came out". She blushed and walked away and I felt strangely vindicated for saying something like. Over all I think there are a lot of in shape people that play the game, and it makes me smile to see that people from all sorts of demographics are enjoying the game.

it seems to em that gamers in general, tho frequently joking, find ourselves to be a pasty potbellied lot. and i wonder why.

I am a probation officer and I am a tad mmmmmmmmm
"big boned" LOL :D

Did I smell donuts???????

But my personality rocks ;)

G'day

Now that I'm wearing 34" waist jeans again strangers strike up conversations on the assumption that I'm a Rugby player (again).

In my last gaming group we had a bloke who plays indoor soccer, indoor cricket, or cricket at least three times a week (5'10", about 170 lb); a bloke who was a very strong contender for the Australian Olympic Handball team; a 6', 300 lb kung fu instructor; a telephone linesman (6'1" 165 lb); a 5'5" size 10 woman; and myself.

Regards,

Agback

Back at my first gen con, one of my friends (guy who used to go by the name Fagan Skullcrusher on the wotc boards; understand he's known by his real name here... :D ;) ) told me that there were two types of gamers: The one who needs to wrap his belt around him four times, and the one who needs four belts to wrap around him once.

I'd say that generally holds true in my experience =)

Damn, whoever told you that was WITTY BEYOND BELIEF! :D

Hmm...I myself don't fit into the category of the fat slob or the skinny jittery guy. I'm 5'11" *pulls out scale* 170 lb. Hey! I lost 10 pounds, cool.:) Mostly muscle, on my way to but not quite arrived at a 6-pack, farmer's tan from work. I've had quite a few of my female friends tell me that they think I'm cute/good looking, but that's with the glasses off. Contact lenses are a godsend, never leave home without 'em! :D next on the list: Corrective lazer eye surgery. It's getting less expensive by the day.

Now that school's out (I graduate HS on Monday, YAY!) I'll be spending the summer in a constant state of working outdoors lugging heavy stuff around, hittin' stuff with sledges, etc(Residential/Light Commercial Construction). Good pay and good physical benefits as well. ;) Let's see, after paying off debts, I'll have about $1,800 in my pocket, and college isn't going to cost a dime. Life is beginning to look up. :)

In general, the stereotype is due to the general majority of gamers living on pizza, getting little-no exercise, living in a dark room, the works. It's not that hard to get out of this lifestyle though. Start eating ONLY when you're hungy, and then try to avoid the pizza for the most part, a well-made salad tastes better than you'd expect. When you're thirsty, drink tea, juice, or water(tastes better than you'd think), avoid them sodas. Either start playing a sport, start exercising a bit each day, or get a job that involves a good amount of physical activity in some form or another. OPEN YOUR WINDOWS! Start wearing colors other than black. Get out of the house every now and then. It's easy and you won't regret it, trust me. ;)

In my gaming group, there's one guy who is "heavy" , but he's also very tall, hulking and someone I'd want on my side in a fight. He walks a lot (doesn't have a car). The rest of the guys in my group are all average sized, good looking guys (the big guys cute too...in his own way) . I'm the only female in the group and I'm average sized (about 5'5 125 lbs). Past gaming groups I've known, follow the same pattern as far as looks go. Mostly just average, normal looking people.
Interesting group. I take it your avatar is a self-pic? If so, I have to say that you're quite pretty.

Hmm, the three other guys in my group:
Ron - 'Bout 6 foot tall, on the heavy side, but carries his weight well. If he'd work out a bit he'd be a brick ****house. Kinda pale.
Drew - 'Bout 5'6" tall, very slightly on the heavy side, but a strong guy. Pale as hell, but he's Irish, so that's no surprise. None of us, not even him can figure it out, but he has incredible ease in picking up chicks. I'll let him elaborate on that when he gets back to the boards.
Chris - 'Bout 5'9" tall, not heavy, not skinny, average. Scores very well in the looks department, it's a surprise he isn't a babe magnet.
Jeremy(Me) - See above description at top of post.

Personally, I am a goddess with totally ripped abs and legs that are to die for.

But given how much time I spend sitting on my ever so adorable butt peering at a computer monitor (where I do my work and 90% of my socialization activities) it isn't my job or my hobbies that support that body image.
*SNIP*
Care to back up that statement with a pic?:D

Sterotypes

Im 6'5" and 385lbs, and I fence twice a week for 3-4 hours, im not what people call in shape. But I can out fence most of my counter parts who are 10 years and 200 and more pounds lighter than me, as for my gamer buds well thats pretty diverse.
You have Andy who is a health advocate, eats mostly what he calls whole foods. And is closest to what people would call in shape.
Then you have Joe who is 6'3 and looks anorexec, yet is also the guy who orders his own X-large pizza and finishes it with no help.
You have Greg who is 5'7 and muscular, and entirley coated in hair. I have yet to see him eat, even when we have gamed for a couple days in a row.
Then there is Tom who is 6'1 and built, yet I never see him consume anything but beer and chips.
And to round things out you have Kevin, who is 5'0" 85 pounds soaking wet and eats once every couple of days.

None of these guys has esteem problems that I know of, and all are pale as far as the skin color goes.
I would say that the stereotype is pretty much false, in fact if you look at the pictures on this site from the cons and gamedays you will see a pretty diverse crowd out there.
Oh and im surprised that part of the stereotype wasn't something to do with hygene, that was something I used to here at my local game store. Some of the players wouldnt attend the weekend instore sessions due to the fact that they thought the room where everyone played smelled like a gym locker.
