Gamer Terms/Jargon that Needs to Change

My personal favorite GM/DM appellation has always been "Supreme Lord Commander," but my players seem to think I'm a bit of an ass when I require them to use it.

Hmmm, go figure......

I used to insist on "Your Imperial Highness, Shaper of Destiny, Devourer of Beer and Pizza, Exclamation Point!"

However, I've mellowed a bit in my middle years, so GM or DM is cool with me.

If there's anything criticism towards 4e taught me, it's that the DM should be called The Fun Tyrant.

Alternately, criticism towards 3e taught me the DM should be called Blizzard.

One reason I'm pondering these ideas is because I've seen advice against using jargon suggested in many places. Generally, if people don't know what you're talking about, you're going to have a hard time communicating with them.

The Internet, Dummies books, and other places exist to look these things up. We also have a society that seems to want everything two days ago.

There is no need to break with tradition.

We are unique gentlemen (and ladies) in that we create our own entertainment through long years of rigorous preparation, playtest, and play. We forge our games in the fire of our will. But tonight, let us celebrate. Gentlemen (and ladies), you have our gratitude. :p

Getting rid of jargon is virtually impossible. Because your talkingg about getting rid of the words that describe the things a sub-culture is oriented around.

While it may set up a barrrier to comprehension by outsiders, the general intent is not to exclude, but to expedite communication between people in that sub-culture.

A good part of my job is learning the jargon of the businesses we work with. I'm not going to tell doctors that the dcoument that summarized findings should not be a called a Report, because that conflicts with term used for a formatted query against the database meant to relay information to the user.

Lastly, and Laneffan is going to love this, if we were able to make everyboduy use common words so that everybody could follow along, we'd be living in 1984 with GoodSpeak.

Frankly, anybody who can't sense there's jargon being used that they don't understand and can't discern its meaning and won't take some effort to learn it, doesn't deserve to have it dumbed down for them.

Four-letter words good, two-letter words better?
