Gamer Zero Video: Magic Items/Alchemy

What really worries me is that they started on this book even before the PHB was in its final form... there's going to be some real crap in there.
Uh, just because they started on it before the PHB was finished doesn't mean it was finished before the PHB. If you already have a good idea of what the core rules are going to look like, I see no reason to at least *start* thinking about ideas for other supplements. No basis for assuming the final source book is based purely on a PHB beta.

They've done that before, though. For instance, some of the books that came out right after 3.5 contained mistakes because they referenced the 3.0 rules instead. Heck, even the 3.5 rules weren't internally consistent even in the core rulebooks (two references to the same rule might disagree). I wouldn't be at all surprised if some of the material in Adventurer's Vault, Draconomicon, and Martial Power were designed and balanced with a defunct rule in mind.

Huzzah, more Side-Sword fans :)

I hope they expand the groups of weaponry, even just have subtle difference.

Good Lord no! Sorry, but I do not want to go back to the days of having to have a different set of stats for every possible variation of edged weapon between 3" and 6' at 1/2" increments with every possible blade shape and hilt configuration.

Long swords, Broad swords, Back swords, side swords, arming swords, tai-chi swords, falcatas, etc, etc, etc...

Why on earth should each of them have seperate stats? One of the best things 3e ever did was refuse to make seperate stas for nigh identical weapons. A gladius, a wakizashi and an english archers short sword are all short swords.

That doesn't mean they all look the same, and it doesn't mean your character can carry the one of his choice so by all means describe your character as having a side sword and feel free to use any picture you like, but please don't demand different stats. Think of the children!

I do think I would like to see some options for things like basket hilts and blade catchers however...

a) Alchemy is covered by rituals
snip
b) There is a Martial equivalent for "Ring of Spell Storing

a) as I understand it Alchemy is similar to rituals in mechanics but is a different thing, he says you need a feat to use alchemy and then you can start looking around to learn different recipes for making Alchemical fire and whatever

b) I suppose something with cinestetic memory that learn one of your move and let you use it once more per enconunter or per day

I was actually thinking of Capoferro's manual, La Verdadera Destreza, and other european martial arts manuals that survive to this day.
Truly, manuals of puissant skill at arms!

No Alchemy in core rules... :(

but its covered by rituals... this could be another hint about how crafting in general works... :)

And Introducing a torch as viable alternative to a sunrod also seems quite ok for me...

I'm sure we'll have some sort of scroll mechanic for Exploits. Pamphlets that tell you how to kick? :)
I hope not, though I'm sure it's in vain. That was a huge head-scratcher in Bo9S and I still can't bring myself to actually include them in a game.

What, the barbarian horde charges the warblade and he whips out his handy-dandy diagram for a whirlwind-type maneuver? Or, just as bad, he breaks the trinket in his hand and his body begins executing a maneuver he doesn't actually know? Of course, both of these are non-magical effects.

A better option would be an item that aids a warrior's focus and allows him to use a maneuver twice in an encounter.

"Gem of the Spirit of Highkicker Bloodgown"

You can activate this item once, and then it is destroyed. Doing so calls upon the warrior spirit of Highkicker Bloodgown, famed for kicking trolls so hard in the face that their heads flew right off their necks, allowing you to use the Kick Face Technique.

Alternatively:

"Hey! I know kung fu!"
