Gaming and Me

Tinker Gnome

Adventurer
I apologize in advance for venting here.

I have lately found that Gaming does not hold my interest as much as it used to. It is at the point where even if I found a good group I would probably not join up. I know Burn Out is probably fairly common if you have been into something for a number of years, but I still wish that I had an interest in Gaming.

I still enjoy reading these forums, I have just found that I really do not care that much anymore about what game system is better than that game system.

The Pathfinder system sort of holds my interest, so I will consider checking that out.

I guess I have just grown to prefer either reading or playin video games over playing in a TTRPG as of late.

Again, I apologize for whining here. I just had to let this out somewhere.

You might try (if you think it might help and you want to be re-energized) playing in some TTRPG's that you might not normally think would be fun - start trying out some systems that are outside your comfort zone.

Just an idea, but you may find something you like better, or maybe it will provide that time away you need and new energy to go back to the usual's ;)

If you're finding that the time invested in gaming is not producing the same feelings of fulfilment that it once did, then, IMO, the best thing to do is simply take a long break.

Pick up a gaming book every few weeks and read a bit. If you're still uninspired, take more time away.

It may also be simply that your tastes are changing, and you want a new outlet for your creative energies/imagination.

You're preaching to the choir here, dude. I've been on break from my group's game for the last 5 motnhs. I never thought it would happen to me, but the return just did not justify the investment. It has many factors, but the biggest one is that they're mired in D&D. I just can't play it (or any one game) indefinitely. No end in sight, either. I plan to just sit it out until the enjoyment comes back. It's either that or find a new hobby.

Everyone needs to take a break once in a while; and there is nothing wrong with not gaming anymore if that is what you prefer. I have found that when I have big and exciting changes in my life (a new job, new city, etc) I tend to lose interest in gaming for a while (usually get my fix by reading Knights of the Dinner Table).

Funny, since I have grown tired of video games and as a consequence concentrated more on roleplaying.

I also started looking into board games again. I bought Arkham Horror and I'm having tons of fun playing it. Luckily everyone I invited to play so far was excited about it, as well.

And I doubt I'll ever tire of reading...

I can imagine I may return to playing video games at some point but at the moment (and for the previous 1.5 years) nothing managed to catch my interest.

I was in that boat for a long time. For me, the big contributing factors were that everybody in my vicinity seemed to only be playing D&D and that every campaign/adventure was just another tired, old, retread of something that I had already played dozens of times over.

I really needed to play something new and/or different (even if it was just D&D in a truly original setting) but nobody wanted to do that. I didn't actually get out of the slump until this last Summer, when some friends of mine and I started playing Dark Heresy — which was just what the doctor ordered.

I'm absolutely having a blast still playing D&D and other games. I'm a little tired of continuously talking about gaming when it's often the same issues and the same conversation.

Have you decided what to do? Will you take a break or possibly try some other games for awhile?

I'll be all about gaming for six months or until a campaign ends, but take a two month break here and there when I get my own case of burn out. Just not that interested. Then I'll see the latest article on Dragon, realize I don't have the latest supplement, and my first thought is "Man, what the hell have I been doing. I gotta get the group together for a campaign!"
