Classical music, often Holst; soundtracks from older movies. Sometimes a prelude with lyrics, for example The March of Cambreadth -

In my head, all too often the music is Hamster Dance or Yakety Sax...

The Auld Grump, you may think that this is an excuse to use March of Cambreadth... ummm, yeah!

As GM I have not used music as background in my games, but I have been tempted! The main thing preventing me has been the issue of having plenty of other things to do behind the screen to keep organized enough to pull it off in a sensible fashion.

I agree. That's one of the main reasons I made Syrinscape... It just runs... making sounds every now and then and playing a song every so often. You just select the environment you want, hit go, and it does the rest.

You can also set it up to play specific sounds on a mouse click... but most of the time, one is busy enough GMing...

Any time the party gets on any kind of seagoing vessel, we immediately go to Youtube and bring up T-Pain.

"WE'RE ON A BOAT, MOTHERF*****!"

Otherwise, we don't generally use a soundtrack, although I've thought about it from time to time. My inclination would be to go with symphonic rock, which has a suitably epic flavor. Movie soundtracks could work too, but might get distracting if people make the connection to the movie. Would be interested to hear about other people's experiences.

I like movie soundtracks. Conan (original) is great for fantasy. Star Wars for that game. One time we accidentally called a star destroyer and the DM played the Imperial march when Lord Vader appeared on the holo-projector. That was scary. I even scare myself with the Predator 2 soundtrack for one game I was running.

But most times in play we just use some streaming channel.

I'm running Deadlands, so soundtrack tends to be stuff from Western movies, as well as a few classical pieces by Copland.

This also works for Firefly and for a Fallout game set in the west. :)

Openers (the ones with lyrics) can include Cool Water, El Paso, Murder Bull (hard to find), Big Iron, The Basque, and Beer for My Horses.

The Auld Grump, lay be down by the river boys,
Facing the hot desert sun.
Where the wind will scatter my spirit,
After the coyotes are done....
