Gamma World ? Any New News ?

Hello Bruce!

I was wondering, is the a 'canon' Gamma World setting, or are you approaching the post-apocalyptic setting as more of a "You decide how civilization fell" tool/idea kit? Is there a default technology level, or does it allow a Gamma World GM to choose from close-to-present day tech as well as far future tech?

I'm just wondering how much flexibility is built into the assumed setting, if there is one.

Thanks!

Without putting words in the horse's (sorry Bruce :D) mouth, on an RPGnet thread there was considerable discussion of this.

Bruce's approach appears to be toolkit. He was even discussing about having multiple possible histories discussed as well as multiple possible "genres" from gritty to B grade monster action supported :)

The books sound like they will also support making up you own post apocalyptic playground wherever you want, including your home town rather than providing a default setting.

Ah, I've been following the rpg.net threads, but I may have missed or forgotten an explicit statement from the estimable Master Baugh.

I was going to get it no matter what, but no by little brainpan is a-bubble with crazy ideas. Woot, I say! Woot!

Yep, it does. To quote Bruce from another forum:

We've also, I think, loosened up the foreground in useful ways, with more attention to the rules and advice you need to build your own settings. "Blowing Up Your Neighborhood" is a section of one chapter, for instance. I've set as a design goal to minimize telling you "it must be thus and so" and to maximize a sense of working with you. If you want ready-to-go environments, you'll get 'em. (Man are they cool, too.) But if you're a tinkerer, as many of us are, you'll find - I think - a bunch of fresh stuff to play with.

cheers

I found myself dreaming about Gamma World today (I sleep days, work nights). I've dreamed about PA worlds before (I suffer from depression) but never an actual RPG setting. :) I guess I'm really looking forward to the new GW version. :)

I hope they kept the odd ball science-fantasy equipment, the "Black Ray" gun was great, among numerous others. I don't want it to be too serious of a sci-fi game. GW has always been sci-fantasy. I just can't wait to dig in.

Well humour is good but Comedic isn't I hope it isn't as Comedic as Omega World was, which although a great mini game lost the post apocalyptic grit by being too light hearted IMO.

I can't wait for this book though about time Gamma World reared its lovable head again..its been missed :)

The humor I like in GW is the stuff that hinges on rediscovering lost technology - like figuring out how a hand grenade works, and applying that knowledge to a can of diet coke which has superficial similarities - or the "our past run amok" situation, with AIs and so forth perverting their instructions over the ages with strange and sometimes funny results.

The Hoops? Not so cool with...

My attitude, while writing, was to say, "OK. Suppose I live in a world where there's feathered fish and gun-toting rabbits and intelligent weapons. What's it like?" This isn't a joke viewed from a distance, this is MY LIFE. Whether or not it seems silly from the outside (and I don't think it does), to the people living in it, it's deadly serious. I played it straight as much as possible, simply accepting the weirdness of Gamma World as an objective fact and proceeding from there.
