Gandalf as a Paladin?

blackshirt5

First Post
OK, I'm reading Lord of the Rings, and I'm wondering; could you make Gandalf as a Paladin with a custom spell list? I think you could, since he doesn't use any real high-level effects, he's good with a sword, and he doesn't really use any direct damage spells(except in The Hobbit, and those are pretty minor).

Could it be done?

no wonder he had to be 5th level before he recieved shadowfax......

no but really, I could see it. Hes good with a sword, little spellcasting abilities, has a special mount, was a "chosen" of a "god." (correct me if im wrong, but didn't Illuvatar send him to the world with the other wizards?), and as much trouble as he gets in he must have good saves, and a very high charisma. he's also LG.

As long as being a paladin doesn't require fullplate, I could see a robed paladin. I think with the lower level of magic in the world, Gandalf could very well possibly be a paladin.

But then again, he wears a pointy hat....and only wizards wear pointy hats....

Sure

I have favor Isatri (+2 ECL template) Bard 15 myself

Just adjust a couple of spell on the list a viola instant Gandalf --

I figure most of what he does is inspire people and in D&D what could be more Bardic than that?

Bards get medium BAB, Longsword profieciency (go Glamdring) Lore skills and spells to 6th level

As for the fire stuff --well its either custom to his list (reasonable IMO) or a product of Narya his magic ring

Sure, why not (3.0 version):

(I didn't add the celestial template to Shadowfax)

Just in watching the movies I really felt that Gandalf was more of a Paladin sort of character than anything else, especially after he came back as Gandalf the White. He probably ought to have an 'Istari' template added to him. Mixing in some levels of Bard certainly fits him as well. 'Wizard' is simply another word for Istari in ME, after all.

I'd say his alignment treads something closer to Neutral or Chaotic Good, personally, as lawful institutions generally seem to test his patience and he often seems more concerned with doing his own thing rather than taking up with a group, but other than that, I could see him as being a paladin, to a degree.

I'm more with those who'd place him as a bard, but paladin isn't entirely inappropriate.

Dude, Gandalf's not human. He simply takes the form of one (an old wise man, which is a lot easier for him to dispense his counsel to others).

Because he is an Istar, only he can go up against the fiend, Balrog.

No, really?

Of course; I'm asking if you were statting him up to use, could you do it with a Paladin?

No. Fighter first, unless the Valar sent him down as an already high-level character. But honestly, there has to be a certain level of Fighter class to be that proficient with sword and staff (one-handed).
