Gatsu Character

SeanXD

First Post
Hi, In my current campaign of D&D, we got into a fight with 8 Mind Flayers and we are only level 10, so I may need a new character in a few days 0.o . My thoughts were to create a character based on Gatsu (branded)from the "Sword of the Berserk" Manga/Anime. I was wondering if anyone out there could build a D20 character for me since I am pretty new to D&D and probably can't build a half decent character if my life depended on it. If anyone is willing, I would preffer this character to weild a large greatsword, possibly go into rage modes (fits Gatsu), do good damage against undead and/or demons, and to be able to wield his sowrd decently and not get huge penalties. Besides that, if anyone wants to add anything else that fits to his personality, fighting style, or w/e, please add in whatever you want to make him rock in melee combat =P. If you don't know who he is, just searh for the Manga on wikipedia and it should give a fairly detailed description of Gatsu and how he fights. Anyways, I would greatly appreciate someone throwing me ideas oh helping me create a character. Thanks for any help and for taking the tim to read this ^^.

You might be overestimating the ease of finding info on Gatsu. You might want to tell us about the character in your own words. It will also help to tell us what sources you can use and what level the PC will be starting as (IOW, does your DM have a "death penalty" for new PCs).

I got this from the description of a game based on the Manga:
Because Guts' sword is so devastatingly huge, it can't be used accurately in close confines (except when in Berserk Mode). Luckily, Guts has his trusty hand crossbow to use when he can't wield Dragon Slayer. Also at his disposal are throwing knives (unlimited ammo), grenades, and a devastating hand cannon. Grenades and rounds for the hand canon can be found by destroying certain objects in the environment.

Near as I can tell, he's a guy with a big sword, a hand crossbow, throwing knives and the like.

The sword sounds unusually large- to me, that means its a weapon that is oversized as compared to the PC's size. In 3.5, there are few ways to do this: either you take the Monkey Grip feat or you must be one of the 2 races that have Powerful Build (Half-Giant or Goliath). You should note that PB is mechanically superior, but that MG is open to any PC...and that the effects of the 2 don't stack.

In addition, there are exotic blades out there that may have that extra-nifty to them that you might enjoy, like the Jovar...but that will require taking the Feat Exotic Weapon Proficiency: Jovar.

The hand crossbow is an exotic weapon, and that will require taking the Feat Exotic Weapon: Hand X-bow.

Knives are a simple weapon and cheap, but if you want to make them unlimited like the game, that will take some work. It can be done, no question, but its a tad exotic.

Grenades are usually simulated in D&D by Alchemist's Fire grenades. There are other grenades in the RW (and maybe the game, I don't know), and similarly, there are other alchemical grenades available.

The Hand Cannon would require either some kind of setting involving gunpowder- ask your DM- or some kind of exotic PC building that simulates the effect of having such a weapon.

Possible character classes include:
  1. Fighter
  2. Samurai (Oriental Adventures)
  3. Paladin
  4. Barbarian
  5. Cleric (certain builds)
  6. Duskblade
  7. Psychic Warrior
  8. Battle Sorcerer
  9. Kensai (PrCl)

Possible Feats include:
  1. Power Attack
  2. Cleave
  3. Great Cleave
  4. Monkey Grip
  5. Exotic Weapon Proficiency
  6. Weapon Focus
  7. Weapon Specialization

monkey grip is the first step. Then try to see if you can get your dm to allow the 3.0 FR book. iIRC 3.0 Forgotten realms had a heavy weapon feat that let you wield an extra heavy weapon, bumping the damage die one step from the excess mass IIRC.

You'll have a large greatsword with the weight of a huge greatsword.

Ahhh, yes- I forgot! Good catch, ftdm!

The book you're thinking of is Magic of Faerun, and the Feat is Heavy Weapon. The only thing is that the weapon has to be made of Alchemical Gold or Alchemical Platinum...neither of which is cheap, of course!

I just found some additional info on Gatsu.

It seems that what I thought "Hand Cannon" meant- namely, a hand-held single shot firearm with a large projectile- seems to be more a firearm of some kind that is part of a prosthetic arm. "Hand Cannon" = Mini-cannon inside his hand.

That's a bit tougher- it might be best to do that as a unique but non-relic level magic item.

Other than that, perhaps levels in something like Battle Sorcerer or WarMage (possibly using Orb spells?), Warlock, or even one of the Psi classes...including the Kineticist.

If levels are taken in an actual spellcasting class, the "Hand Cannon" effect could be simulated by Reserve feats or by some of the Alternative Class features or variants.

In addition, a Sorcerer/Battle Sorcerer (or other spontaneous arcane caster if your DM is lenient) version of this PC could use a version of my Mage-Brute, but using the Celestial Heritage feats- instead of the Draconic Heritage feats of mine- including Celestial Sorcerer Lance to do more damage to evil critters.

Or you could take something a bit more direct and flexible like Arcane Strike.

I'll have to thin about the monkey grip vs. Goliath race, but as for the bow and knives (knowing how my dm plays) I don't think that they would be extremely usefull and possibly waste a few feats on them. The grenades and his arm cannon would be options however (don't know how his arm canon could be implemented). But, my DM said that if a char dies and isn't revived, they can create a new characte and have its level reduced, although I do not know exactly. As for a more accurate source/ description:
"Guts is the protagonist of the story: a tall, muscular man with a huge sword called the Dragon Slayer and a prosthetic left forearm that has a magnetic grip and conceals a cannon, and can be fitted with a small repeating crossbow. Guts is a Byronic hero who is able to struggle against causality, but seemingly unable to overcome it." Also, normally when Gatsu is in the heat of battle with demons and the Apostles, he tends to go into a bloodthirsty, rage mode and continues to fight until everyone of them is dead. When he becoomes like this, he has an easier time wielding his sword and really enjoys slaughtering the demons.
So. I'm pretty much looking for a tough swordsman who can swing around a giant hunk of iron, go into a frezy and really cause havoc, be able to use an arm cannon & grenades (maybe the repeating crossbow), and do more damage against demons/ undead. If you want pictures of the guy here are some a links:

It just a mini cannon that is part of his prosthetic metal arm. He points it at his target, pulls a cord on the side, the hand drops down or lifts up (i forget which) like its on a hinge to reveal the cannon. He normally pulls the cord with his teeth since he is holding his sword in the other hand. Right afterwords it produces a giant explosion (presumably from a large quantity or gun powder and possibly a small cannon ball) and the enemy is left with a massive hole in it or completely blown apart.

And it really doesnt need to be exact, just a mini connon on his arm or in his prosthetic arm or any kind would do =P

Hmmm...I can think of a lot of ways to do that, but it sounds like a customized magical prosthetic that can fire 1 fireball (or some kind of Orb spell)/day would be the most efficient way to do it.

Prosthetic = Graft. There are various graft rules scattered over 3.5e supplement. But basically, they are just magic items which is grafted into one's body (thus, cannot be separated). The cost is calculated using magic item creation rule. So, I guess your DM can start from a gauntlet (Gattsu often punch with it!) which allows the wearer to fire fireball or similar spell.

Rules and stats of some warforged component may help, too.

Your DM can make his repeating crossbow as another special magic item, I guess. If you worry about the required feat, he can give the weapon a skillfull property (Complete Arcane) which makes the wielder automatically proficient in the weapon.
