GEN CON and the Indianapolis Area

Tipping rate is 15% usually. So $3 for every 20 you spend. Tipping is usual at restaurants where the food is brought to you, for taxi rides, and for someone carrying your baggage (a couple of dollars seems about right for that).

I'll be taking a taxi from the airport to the convention center and am guessing $10-15. You might see if there is someone around heading to the same place, they may share the cab with you.

I've been looking at their weather and it appears that it will likely be in the mid 80s (~29 C). Midwest US weather in mid-summer is usually warm and pleasant, sometimes humid, and occasionally stormy.

As for the convention, I'd say just prepare to be flexible.

As for fav restaurants I'm a fan of Buca di Beppo, Rock Bottom, Morton's and Bertolini's. I'm drawing a blank on some of my other frequent places...Most of the ones I listed are for if you don't mind spend a little more money. $15-$50/person. We don't really go to any bars though mostly concerts and plays downtown. There are plenty of strip clubs on Shadeland about 15 minutes from downtown though.

Hmmm food.

Word of warning Buca is family size portions. Spaghetti may cost a lot, but it feed a few people.

Downtown there is Charlie and Barnies (chili), Qdoba is on the circle (think mexican, but fast food...not taco bell fast food either), Steak and Shake, Irish Claudah (irish food and beer), subway, lots of sandwich places.

Bars
There is a bar (group of bars) in Circle Center mall. Admission into 1 gets you into all 4 or 5. Slippery Noodle mentioned a few times is a blues bar. There is also the Ugly Monkey, Club Lotus, Have a Nice Day Cafe and Jillians. I think if you search on the web for the name and Indianapolis you should pull up info on them.

Strip clubs
Red Garter down town. PT's on the east side. Brads Gold Club on the west side. It would only take 20 some minutes to get to either of the clubs if you are in the downtown area.

any good 18 and over dance clubs in the Indy area? Chicago was a wasteland of 21 and up only clubs.

It would be great if the served drinks to those 21 and up, but getting a few friends in would be a priority.

Places to eat

As a few others have said, Buca di Beppo's is a good place to eat, but bring your friends. It's family-style italian, and one entree will feed 3-5 people.

Rock Bottom and Palomino are good also, and Houlihans is reliable. Also, Champps (located in Circle Center Mall) is a solid choice. TGIFriday's is one block west of the convention center on Washington Street (inside a Marriott, I think). All are within a few blocks of the convention center.

For something quicker, the Circle Center food court has a number of options, and is only a couple blocks away. There are two Subway locations within walking distance of the convention center, and an Einstien Bagles on Illinois street.

There are a number of nightclubs downtown, but I haven't visited any of them. Unfortunately, I don't think that Indy's any better with regard to 18-and-over night spots.

Eating with a vegetarian??

I'm all for ribs and beer, but I've got a non-meat eater. Know any vegetarian-friendly places to eat? Maybe Indian food? I've looked in the AAA book but am drawing a blank.

Thanks for offering yourself as a font of all knowledge!

I know there is an Indian place on illinois street. I'm pretty sure there is one on Meridian just north of South street as well.

Just as an FYI. Downtown is bordered by 4 streets. North,East, South, and West. North is on the north side of downtown and so forth

I'm probably a little off on the spelling too, but it's spelled more like Claddagh. I've only been to the one on the north side and it's pretty good. (very greasy!)
