GenCon 2004 Memories

I went by the Enworld booth Thursday and got my badge, sadly I do not post enough to be recognized it seems (dramatic *le sigh*) :)

But the ironic thing, my Enworld badge helped me get recognized by a member of the GenCon forums (Randy Porter), and by Keith Baker...go figure!! :p

Has anyone else ever had the trait of running into people at GenCon you have not seen in years? I mean, completely out of touch years? It happens every year for me, this year twice even! :)

The best part was meeting all of the other EN Worlders. I hate to say it, but I was pleasantly surprised by how pleasant and generally cool our little community is. All of the other judges were great to talk to and Joseph Miller was En World's slave for the Ennies and deserves much more swag than he took.

The dealer's room was okay. I was a little disappointed in the amount of announcements. Outside of Green Ronin's Thieves World, I can't remember anything knocking my socks off.

I think Gen Con will be bigger next year, but fear it won't be from RPGs, but rather, board games, card games and computer games. Nothing wrong with the shift in focus, but it becomes a convention I don't need to go to.

I didn't do any gaming, but did a lot of miniature painting. Gen Con has a Paint & Take section where you can paint and take home a miniature. I managed to get into that feature twice. Also did some reading amongst all the walking.

A lot of new miniatures were here and some very hard to find miniatures. I picked up quite a few from Magnificant Ego and a limited edition Harbringer figure from the Harbringer magazine (I subed with #3 so missed the first limited edition miniature.)

I was disappointed that Atlas didn't have their new Dungeoneer games or new Penumbra (Seven Civilizations), but otherwise happy with new releases. On the board game front, I finally picked up the crate expansion for Apples to Apples. Good stuff there.

Indianapolis itself was an interesting experience for me. Last year I was only there for the Con for a day. This year I walked around quite a bit. Coming from Chicago, Indianapolis is very small, especially their downtown area. Their downtown area is in essence, a suburb of Chicago. Took me forever to find a Bank One and I didn't see any of the famous chains outside. A lot of the fast food places were inside, like Subway, but not on the street. Very interesting experience.

Once again, best part, meeting fellow En Worlders. Great to put some faces to the names.

Such a great time, such good people, and how cool was it having my Con badge, AND my ENWorld name badge!

It was great meeting you all!

Jaldaen is a good guy. He was the best guy to work with and one of the best d20 writers I knew.

I am planning on making my first GenCon pilgrimage next year, so I hope to see all of you guys!

Oh, crap! You just reminded me, I forgot to beg or (gasp) buy stuff from Atlas. In particular, I don't have Seven Serpents. I even saw Michelle Brown Nephew at the booth (Atlas shared a booth with Steve Jackson Games) one time.

Speaking of said booth, it's sometimes eerie to me to be treated as a semi-celebrity. The didn't get our printed badges so we had handwritten badges in huge black ink letters, announcing my presence to all. While walking past the Steve Jackson booth, I heard a cry of "It's Alan Kohler!" I go over there, and it was Ken Hite!

I begged AEG to get me some stuff, too. They said no. But when I got home, there was World's Largest waiting for me. So I guess their marketing manager knows what he's doing. ;)

One of my big quests was T-shirts. Which reminds me, time for more Psion's GenCon ENWorld Awards:

Most Painful Tshirt to Get:
Spycraft CCG.

Most Heinously Failed Innuendo check:
Me, when Buttercup and TB were trying to extract me from the Spycraft CCG Demo!

Best Comment Inspiring Buttercup to use an Obscene Gesture:
"I'm American!"

Most Overpowered Username, according to Chris Ode:
Psion, naturally. ;)

Coolest ENWorld Moderator at GenCon:
Eridanis

Lamest ENWorld Moderator at GenCon:
Eridanis

Purchase Fact that would Astonish Mark Clover:
The only full price purchase I made at GenCon was from NBOS (Astrosynthesis).

I was in the RPGA most of the time. I did stop by and get my badge and saw Teflon Billy manning the booth. I was at an RPGA game at the time of the ENnnies and missed them.

I played the Living Greyhawk stuff and other games including Spycraft which was a blast. The drive home was a pain. There was a huge backup on I94 near Ann Arbor so I had to take back roads to get home but otherwise I had a blast at my first GenCon since 2001.
