GenCon Herf?

Anyone interested in a GenCon herf?

For those who do not know, a herf is a gathering of cigar smokers, usually at an establishment that serves beverages that contain various quantities of the nerve toxin monohydroxyl ethane, at which such beverages might be consumed and cigars are smoked. It might or might not include visits to local cigar vendors. Although well-developed herfs may have full catering, pre-purchased cigars, and other accoutrements, all that is required is that cigar lovers congregate together where libations flow and smoke cigars.

Is there interest?

I'm a cigar aficionado, I'll come. I'm big enough to meet the man who insulted me without provocation. :)

What are you smoking?

I went over the top on that--but last year I got a bellyful of whining from stuck-up yuppie gamers over various electronic communication outlets after last GenCon who just were so SCANDALIZED at the complete lack of proper social graces on the part of Indianapolis. After a bear is prodded enough times, it comes to expect it whenever something resembling a stick shows up.

Until GenCon came along, the only things that Indianapolis hosted were church conventions, civil rights conferences, and sporting events. Of the three, only one lends itself to wild living, and most of that is done on a tailgate or in a bar.

Write to the chamber of commerce and let them know. Unfortunately, they ignore locals when it comes to downtown.

As for what I smoke, my wife says that I do not like strong cigars. I like cigars that grab you by the collar, throw you against a wall, and slap you silly. Of course, those are her words, not mine.

I'm down with that. I'm into cigars, and have a small humidor of my own. Nothing fancy, and nothing more expensive than some of my favorite Dominican brands, but I'll be around.

There's something both very disgusting and supremely cool about cigar smoking and cigar bars. :)

Have fun, gents! Sounds like the community's plans are already off to a great start.

That reminds me, a location will need to be picked. I'm not much of a barfly, myself, and a lot of the Indianapolis bars and restaurants permit only cigarette smoking. Of the ones that do permit cigars, most are on the northeast, out among the $5,000,000 McMansions (I kid you not).

Nicky Blaine's: This is a true "cigar bar" and bills itself as such. However, it is very expensive and definitely caters to the business crowd. It's a pure cocktail bar. They do maintain their humidor properly, although selection is more flash than substance. The Dominican Monte #2 can be found here, and plenty of red-dot Cohibas.

Bourbon St. Distillery: Not at all upscale, and they will have al fresco and balcony seating open in the summer. The menu is very conventional bar food. It has a very small humidor if you don't bring your own.

Claddagh Pub: Admittedly my own favorite. It has a good selection of food, including good Irish cooking. They keep the Guinness at closer to proper temperature than does any other bar in the entire county. It's spacious and has a very good ventilation system. I have always brought my own smokes here, so I never looked for a humidor.

OK. I accept your apology (that was one was it?) :D A few things:

1. I am NOT a yuppie. My age starts with a 4. I could be considered a member of the OFC, but I don't feel like one.

2. I don't come just for the convention. I consider this like a vacation. Origins is just for the convention. I'm there for at least 10 days. I'll play golf, I'll sightsee, I'll watch a ballgame (glad that the Indians are in that week). I'll try to do a day in Cincinnati & Louisville, since they're so close.

3. I was saddened when GenCon came to Indy. I LOVED Milwaukee. But here's the rub: The people of Indianapolis made me feel welcome, everyone was friendly. I made a lot of new contacts, one of them took me to Yats for lunch.

I don't know who these people were who has beef with the social graces of the city, but rest assured you've got me as a convert to the hospitality of Indianapolis. I'm glad GenCon is there.
